You Get a Vote! You Get a Vote! EVERYBODY GETS A VOTE!

If you’ve read our piece on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, you know that voting this November is more important than ever. Republicans currently have control of both the House and the Senate and we need everyone to head to the polls next month to cast their ballots for some new Representatives and Senators.

To find out if you’re registered to vote in North Carolina, follow this link:

In North Carolina, the deadline to register in person or by mail is October 12th — that’s THIS FRIDAY! The NC deadline has been extended for the 28 counties affected by Hurricane Florence. In these counties, the deadline is October 15th. Alamance County is not one of them, so if your residence is on Elon’s campus or one of the surrounding cities like Burlington, your deadline is October 12th.

Between October 17th and November 3rd, residents can register and vote simultaneously at early voting sites. When you go to an early voting site to do this, you have to attest to your eligibility and provide proof of residence. This proof of residence can be any of the following:

  • A current college/university photo identification card (your Phoenix card!!) paired with proof of campus habitation.

  • A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing the voter’s name and address

  • North Carolina driver license

  • Other photo identification issued by a government agency. Any government-issued photo ID is acceptable, so long as the card bears the voter's current name and current address.

Check out this link to find your nearest “one-stop” site. There are three different “one-stop” voting sites in Alamance County alone.

Registered? Great! On election day, the hours for voting are from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m — any voter who is IN LINE by 7:30 pm will be allowed to vote. You can check your voter registration card or use the Voter Lookup tool to find your polling location!

Want your vote to count in your home state? Request an absentee ballot! You can vote by mail by requesting an absentee ballot. Absentee voting instructions are slightly different for every state.

You can easily find yours by googling “absentee voting instructions for *insert your state here*.”

Absentee voting is not as hard as it sometimes seems. For example, in North Carolina, all you have to do is get the absentee ballot form online, fill out the form and mail it to your county board of elections. For NC, it has to be received by the office no later than 5pm the Tuesday before the election. When you receive your absentee ballot, there will be instructions included that tell you exactly what you need to do. Again, the steps for receiving your ballot may be slightly different in every state, so be sure to look up the absentee instructions for your state specifically.

For more detailed basic instructions on absentee voting, visit USA.gov’s absentee voting site.
