WTF is Saging?

Saging, also known as smudging, helps clear out old or negative energy to make room for brighter, more positive energy. Some of our favorite celebrities use this technique such as Miley Cyrus, Lana del Rey, and Stevie Nicks. But what exactly is saging? And how can you do it yourself? The Edge gives you the quick rundown on WTF saging is!

What it is, what’s up:

Saging is a ritualistic way to cleanse a person, place, or object of negative energies. It’s roots are in Native American culture and tradition, as they believe that the smoke from the sage captures the negative energy and takes it with it as it clears. Mother Earth will reabsorb the negative vibes when the smoke clears to filter it back to good energy.

How to do it:

  1. Buy a sage stick, which can be found at most spiritual stores and online. We linked some for you here, here, and here.

  2. Say an affirmation and set your intention as to why you are saging.

  3. Open all your windows and doors, and light your sage completely. You want to get as much smoke as possible, because that is what will capture the negative energy.

  4. Gently guide and wave your sage stick back and forth, and most say it's best to start at your front door in a clockwise circle.

  5. Try and get the sage into every corner of your house, room, apartment, etc. Sometimes the energy can be “stuck” and the sage helps clear the energy out to make room for the new.

  6. Once you have cleansed the areas of the house, leave the sage to sit and burn out on its own on a heat proof surface.

When to do it:

  • If you are moving into a new space for the first time

  • If you or someone you live with is getting over an illness

  • After an argument

  • Before and after a guest enters your space

  • Upon returning home from a crowded area

You can also do this anytime there is a new moon, the start of a new month/year, to help signify new beginnings and new energy flows. Tag us your saging @theedge on Insta!
