Dress Clean: 7 Eco-Conscious Clothing Brands

Did you know that only 2% of the clothing worn in the U.S. is made in the U.S? This means the other 98% of clothing we wear is not locally manufactured This may not seem like a big deal, but when you factor how articles of clothing are designed, manufactured, and distributed, it equates to a lot of CO2 being emitted into our environment.

Not only is the transportation dangerous to our environment, but the development of the actual fabrics is too. For example, polyester and other synthetic fabrics require energy-intensive processes using mass amounts of crude oil. These machines release emissions like toxic organic compounds and acid gases such as hydrogen chloride that have been shown to have a correlation with respiratory disease. There are many other issues that have been a result of the manufacturing of clothing items.

Many brands, specifically based in LA and Australia, have taken small actions that have big impacts to reduce this issue; here are my favorite 7 that I have discovered:

MATE the label- MATE has made a HUGE difference by promising that all of their pieces are made within a five mile radius of DTLA, They’re philosophy is that, “Our relationship with clothing is so intimate. Our skin is constantly breathing and absorbing what lies on it. At MATE we recognize that the full life cycle of clothing matters.”

Thought -  Thought not only carries women’s clothing, but also mens! It is a perfect mix between contemporary and sophisticated styles as well. Thought has very classy taste with a hint of boho. Their main fabrics are hemp and bamboo - how earthy!

AGOLDE- by adopting organic fabrics and fiber alternatives, AGOLDE has been to reduce their footprint. Their style is perfect for a day out with friends or a fun lunch!

Threads 4 Thought - If you have more of a casual, relaxed,  and athleisure style, this brand is perfect for you! Their clean production is only a bonus to their effortlessly laid-back style.

Reformation- From the classic polka-dot and stripe prints to chic all black, Reformation truly has it all. It is a little bit on the pricier side, but it really does an amazing job of encompassing pieces no matter what the occasion is.

YIREH - YIREH has a very majestic, island vibe to it. YIREH is very unique because they are able to use their travels as inspiration and incorporate the cultures of the places they visit into their clothing. YIREH doubles as not only a clothing brand, but also a home decor.

DÔEN - DÔEN is one-of-a-kind. Their inspiration comes from the vintage looks of California. Not only are they ethically and sustainably produced, but DÔEN also has a mission to decrease the gender gap in the supply chain. It’s safe to say they are killing it!

Being eco-conscious doesn’t have to be difficult! It’s taking small actions like all of these wonderful brands to just increase awareness in hopes of reducing your footprint! If you use any of these style tips today, make sure to tag us @theedgemag!
