Tis the Season for Sustainable Fashion

As the winter season comes into full swing, there is a rush to find the perfect gift. Black Friday sales invite people to purchase the hottest new items at the lowest prices, but what if we told you that the perfect gift may be hanging in someone else’s closet?

With the trend of online stores like Depop and Relovv, people are buying clothing that others no longer want or need. Items from well-known name brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton are being sold at considerably lower prices. So the question is, would you ever gift someone a previously worn item?

With the push for environmental wellness, sustainable fashion is becoming more of a necessity. A number of fast fashion retailers have clothing that contains microplastics. Often found in low quality polyester, these microplastics pose a significant danger to marine life. Because the fabric is of a lower quality, it may tatter and turn into waste sooner. If people continue to buy into these brands, the issue is likely to worsen over time.

While the idea of used clothing may sound unappealing, many of these websites are thoroughly vetted and purchases are protected for buyers and consumers. Likewise, in a department store customers regularly try on clothing before purchasing it. This means that buying a ‘new’ garment does not guarantee that it has never been worn.

If you are unsure about buying a sustainable garment for friends and loved ones, there is another option. The online store, Rent-the-Runway allows customers to rent and return high fashion pieces and it has a gift card option. You can promote sustainable apparel and gift someone the freedom to buy what they want!

Ultimately the items the gifts that you give this holiday season are your choice, but considering sustainable fashion is always beneficial to the planet.
