6 Ways to Spice Up a Denim Jacket

As all denim jackets relatively look the same, it’s up to the individual to make it their own and turn it into a true fashion statement. So here are six ways, without needing a needle and thread, to personalize your denim jacket and show the world who you are from the inside out.

Tip #1: Paint that baby!

There are endless possibilities when you give an artist a paintbrush and a canvas, but when that canvas is a piece of clothing, there are even more! And who said you can only paint the back of a jacket? Switch it up by painting stars on the sleeves or a creative message on a popped collar. Bonus tip - the backs of painted jackets make for a great Instagram pic!

Tip #2: Go iron-on patch crazy!

Putting patches on a jacket is like putting stickers on a laptop-- they’re unique to you and give a sneak peek on what you’re into. Kind of like a girl scout vest, patches can show your accomplishments and unique hobbies. In addition, patches make it even easier to add a little extra flare to a standard look.

Tip #3: Whip out your scissors and crop it!

All you need is scissors for this edgy style. First, cut off the bottom of your jacket and create fringe along the edge by pulling at the blue seams.. You can also apply this method to the sleeves, cutting off the cuffs and adding fringe, or even cut off the sleeves entirely, turning it into a statement vest.

Tip #4: Create classic cut-outs!

Keep the scissors out for this one, cut-outs are a quick way to customize your jacket and show off your killer outfit underneath. You can cut out panels, stars, or any other shape to add a one-of-a-kind element to a basic staple. If you want to add an extra touch, you can fill the space with mesh or another shade of denim fabric

Tip #5: Tear some unexpected rips!

If you don’t hear enough dad jokes about your pants being ripped, then rip your jacket too! Creating rips isn’t limited to any spot, so get creative and experiment ripping sleeves, cuffs, and collars-- don’t forget to put a piece of cardboard underneath the area working on to prevent your tool from damaging the fabric or surface behind it.

Tip #6: The mighty hot glue gun!

A hot glue gun is a crafter’s best friend, especially when used to fasten gems, pearls, studs, and more onto your jacket. This simple addition can add a head-turning pop of sparkle to your collar, pockets, or sleeves; the opportunities are endless when sparkles are involved!
