7 Ways to Kill J-Term Boredom Without Going Out

Winter term, commonly known as J-Term at Elon, is the time when Elon students can finally relax and only have three hours of responsibility a day. If you’re someone who likes to stay busy, however, having this much free time may make you a little stir crazy. Most on campus clubs pause their normal meetings and many students go abroad, leaving those stuck on campus slightly bored and full of travel envy. If you’re staying at Elon this J-Term, we get the struggle, and we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite ways to stay entertained during this winter term.

  1. Plan a Road Trip

J-Term is a great time to hit the road and do some exploring. There are plenty of things to do in Raleigh and Greensboro, but if you’re looking for an even bigger adventure, check out this article: https://www.elonedge.com/blog/2017/4/12/travel-guide-road-trip-gems-of-north-carolina?rq=road%20trip%20

2. Pick up exercising

With so much free time, coming up with excuses to get out of going to the gym gets trickier. J-Term is a great time to start working out if you’ve been wanting to but haven’t developed the habit! Elon offers a variety of classes on campus, and there are great options in Burlington like Feel Better Yoga (2 weeks of unlimited classes for $30).

3. Burst the Bubble Programs

Elon offers several programs during J-Term that are hosted by professors, clubs and students. The programs touch on topics like cooking, art and social discussions, and get as specific as floral design. Each program meets between one and three times a week and serve as a great way to get more involved or learn more about a topic you’re interested in.

4. Foster an Animal

Consider fostering an animal during J-Term if your living situation allows it! There’s a big demand in Burlington for foster families, and J-Term gives you the time that’s required to care of a pet. The shelter supplies food and other essentials, so it isn’t an expensive commitment. What could be a better use of your J-Term than helping an animal find a new home?

5. Try Something New

J-term is the perfect time to pick up a skill or hobby you’ve been interested in for a while but haven’t had the time to explore. Read that book that’s been on your list forever, or finally learn to paint. You won’t have the same freedom once the spring semester starts back up.

6. See a Movie in Turner

The School of Communications shows free movies several times a week in Turner Theatre. Grab some blankets and a few friends and take advantage of the free movies (and free snacks).

7. Elon Outdoors Trips

Elon Outdoors is offering rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding trips over J-Term! These Saturday excursions are a great way to stay active, meet new people and keep busy. Registration opens on January 3rd!
