How to Make A Statement with Blue Light Glasses

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, many of us find ourselves on some form of technology throughout the day. Whether we are logging on for a zoom meeting or class, ordering groceries or dinner online, reading, or just catching up on our socials- it’s all online. It gets exhausting staring at a screen all day, and even when we want a break, sometimes our responsibilities and schedules make it hard to pull away from our technology.

This increase in exposure to technology means our eyes are also exposed to more blue light. “Blue light” just means that the light has blue wavelengths. According to an article published by the Harvard Medical School called “Blue Light Has a Dark Side,” “Not all colors of light have the same effect. Blue wavelengths—which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood—seem to be the most disruptive at night.”

The article continues to explain blue light is most disruptive at night time because it affects our circadian rhythms by decreasing how much our brains secrete melatonin. So, this means we should be mindful of how much blue light we are exposed to at night.

As college students, being on our laptops at night is pretty unavoidable, especially during the times of the semester when it feels like all our work is piling up or when finals roll around. Luckily, some things can help! While eliminating technology use at night is the most impactful, other more realistic options are turning on your phone’s “nighttime setting,” downloading filters that block blue light, or wearing blue light glasses.

Of course, we are always looking for ways to make everyday things fashionable, so why not make a statement with your blue light glasses! As always Vogue is here to help. At various Fashion Weeks around the world, Vogue was looking for hints to upcoming trends from all of the stars and attendee’s different street styles. In its article, “Life in Technicolor: Shop Colorful Accessories Inspired by Street Style Stars,” Vogue highlights “ensembles with bright, eye-catching accessories.” These looks were anything from earrings, to shoes, to hair clips, and glasses!
