11 COVID-19 Safety Must-Haves on Your Next Road Trip

Traveling is usually a must for people during their breaks. For some, this is the only opportunity they have to go out and have a vacation. Due to COVID-19, many people have been forced to change the way that they travel to places. Airplanes are still tricky to board, and certain countries have restrictions for travelers.

However, that does not mean you have to stay stuck inside your house or dorm forever. There are ways you can travel without the need to interact with people. You can take a road trip with those close to you—or even by yourself. Now, if you do decide to embark on that road trip journey, there are important items you should bring to ensure that not only you but also those around you stay safe. You will need basic necessities (masks!) and also some items that you might not first think of to pack like deodorant.

As students living in the times of masks, physical distance and a ton of hand washing, it is important to plan ahead. If you are itching to hit the road, we have compiled a list of must-bring items to take to your destination.

Masks

For those moments that you will be stepping out, you will need masks. Whether it is indoor or outdoor, many places will require a facemask so make sure to pack extra!

Hand Sanitizers

This will be an item you will need and should definitely get into the habit of using frequently. It is especially important if  you don’t have access to running water to wash your hands appropriately.

Sealable Bags

Sealable bags may be useful for trash or other miscellaneous things you might need to dispose of. Keeping a clean space means keeping a clean mind!

Disposable Gloves

Whenever you must stop to pump gas, make sure to wear disposable gloves. This will prevent you from having to touch the nozzle—which is inevitably laden with germs. It is also recommended to pay with cards rather than cash. This tip will limit the number of times you have face-to-face interaction with strangers.

Water and Snacks

This may seem like a “travel basic,” but it’s even more important now. If you are someone who wants to avoid having to go through a drive-thru for food, just pack enough water and snacks for the road. That way you can avoid unnecessary stops and risk getting exposed.

Disinfectant Wipes

Not only will you need to wipe down your surfaces, but you will have to do so with your personal items-- most importantly, your phone. Yes, that one thing you touch and take absolutely everywhere with you will need to be wiped every now and then.

Soap

Unless you are staying at a hotel, soap may not always be available. If you are planning to stay at a camp or rental, pack soap.

Detergent

The detergent will be important once it is time to clean your face masks. If you know you will have access to a washer then you can pack your regular detergent. However, if you are planning to hand wash your mask, then the small portable detergent pods can help.

Ziploc Bags

This will come in handy when you are organizing your items. For example, you can use two bags to label your dirty masks from your clean ones.

Thermometers

Checking your temperature is one thing we want to do often in order to make sure we are healthy. Plus, some locations will require a temperature check before entering, therefore, having a thermometer on you may come in handy.

Medicine

We never want anyone to get sick, but alas, we can not predict the future. In the case that anyone does get sick, having fever or pain-reducing medicine will help during COVID-19 times.
