Introducing: The Struggling Filmmaker
Elon alumni Danielle Toback and Cody Miller have a very special announcement to make: They’re expecting... a podcast!
This creative baby, to be called The Struggling Filmmaker, is about these two recent grads as they try to break into the LA film industry. You can expect the first episode in spring 2020 on Spotify and Apple Music.
It’s not secret that entering the TV and film industries in LA can be difficult. For young professionals like Danielle and Cody, who are new to the scene, there’s certainly a lot to navigate. And so, a podcast was conceived.
“Cody had the idea to make a podcast about filmmaking, and [I] quickly jumped on board,” Danielle explained. “However, unlike other film podcasts that give advice retrospectively, our podcast will be our personal journey. It will explore the struggles that come with working in entertainment, moving to a new city, and life after college.”
Both struggling filmmakers and podcast creators bring to the table different experiences and aspirations. Danielle is an aspiring TV executive who has experience working for TV shows and running a film festival, while Cody’s goal is to become a feature film producer, which was fueled by his own experience freelancing and filmmaking.
The duo has also brought onboard Taylor Gottbetter, an editor and LA native. Additionally, they plan on having several Elon alumni as well as professionals in the film industry as guests on their show.
Even as they’re picking up steam and expanding, it’s clear that The Struggling Filmmaker truly is the brainchild of a dynamic duo, Danielle and Cody. Announcing the podcast on Instagram, Danielle promoted it as a “passion project with my best friend.” In fact, they claim their friendship is really what makes the podcast possible. “As best friends, we believe that our dynamic is special for a podcast. We understand each other, have good banter, and value what each other brings,” said Cody about his relationship with Danielle.
This new podcast will undoubtedly be entertaining for anyone, but Danielle and Cody hope to get the attention of aspiring filmmakers in particular. These are people who can relate to what they’re going through and maybe even learn from their experiences.
“Our goal for the podcast is for up-and-coming professionals who can relate to us [to] feel that they are a part of the conversation and their voices are heard,” Danielle and Cody said. “Finally, we will inspire others to go chase their dreams.”
To all of Elon’s future filmmakers, the duo shares this advice: “Your network starts in college, so get involved, say yes to opportunities, and make content even if it’s terrible. There are always a thousand reasons not to do something, but you only need one to do it… In short, create something new today because why not?”
