Ugly Fashion: The Hidden Gem of the Industry

Even though fashion is subjective, there are a few trends that anyone, no matter who you are, will always give a major thumbs down to. Whether it’s the fabric, texture or color, designers may find their work at the top of a worst-dressed list. This could be embarrassing for any designer, but what if it also makes their brand iconic?

Ugly fashion blends avant-garde and on-trend forms to make garments that turn heads when they move down runways and make their place as infamous fashion moments. Whether people love it or hate it, this aesthetic has a definite place in the industry. So the question is: How does a garment become ugly fashion?

Texture

One of the defining characteristics of ugly fashion is the bold use of texture that would otherwise be considered too overwhelming or abstract for the garment. In this case the fabric alternates between yellow and orange, much like a piece of candy corn, and has a tulle layered material that isn't conventional but functions as an abstract garment.

Combined Patterns

Another characteristic of ugly fashion is the use of completely different patterns side by side. Oftentimes, a designer will do this to add whimsy to the outfit, but it can be quite confusing for everyday consumers to see. For instance, a black and pink polka dot skirt paired with a yellow paisley print top is considered to be in the realm of ugly fashion, simply by mixing and matching polar opposite patterns with colors that are also dissimilar.

Unconventional Form

Lastly, ugly fashion often plays with forms and challenges the traditional fit that clothes are expected to have. The boundaries are pushed into a realm where looks, such as the basic power suit, are reinvented and taken up a notch. The garment to the left is a boxy, angular take on the suit dress and it mocks the traditional form while acknowledging it as the inspiration.

So what do you think? Is ugly fashion a passing fad or is it here to stay? Though these examples may not be outfits that you would choose for regular class days, each one challenges the status quo of what fashion can look like. Let us know what you think by tagging us @theedgemag to be featured!
