Painting Pong Tables: Harder Than You Would Think
We tried to make a party table and this is how it went...
We’ve already covered fraternity coolers, but how about making a party table?! We decided this was the perfect gift for a friend’s 21st birthday so we bought a fold up table and got started! We originally thought this would be a super straight forward process. After a lot of research we started by sanding down the table and painting it with a coat of primer. After it was primed we mod podge the top coat which we thought would be perfect to make it look all shiny. Oh boy were we wrong.
PSA: Let the primer dry for a FULL 24 hours before you try to mod podge or lay painters tape down. We did not do this...
After we primed the table (on our first go around) we set down painters tape in the shape of triangles. We took inspo from Pinterest and Tumblr and thought it would be super cute and trendy to add designs to the triangles instead of in a square formation.
Once the tape was down we went to Lowe’s Home Store and picked up 10 acrylic paints from the paint wall and paid for the sample size, which was only $2.99! We highly recommend doing this instead of ordering online since you can customize your colors and it’s way cheaper!
We headed back to my house and started painting. Once the triangles dried we began to rip up the tape... and this is where it all went wrong. The mod podge caused the table to peel and next thing we knew the whole table looked like a cracked, plastic, peeling mess!
We completely sanded down the whole thing and started from square one. We made SURE to let the primer sit for 24 hours and we didn’t mod podge our first layer. After our little “mess-up” the process was super fun and simple. We got super creative and picked our favorite designs from pinterest, tumblr, different blogs, and vsco. We then treated it like we would have a cooler- traced, painted and clear coated the top!
