From Bots to the Bunker, Is Chrissy Teigen Taking Down the President?
While Chrissy Teigen jumped on Twitter in solidarity with protesters Saturday night, President Donald Trump was taken to the White House bunker, outside lights were turned off for the first time since god knows when, and demonstrations in response to the death of George Floyd ensued. That’s what “MAGA [Make America Great Again] night” looked like at the White House. It’s still unclear why the President designated the evening to “MAGA” on the same day Black Lives Matter protests escalated around the country. Teigen didn’t seem to care what his reasoning was either, but without hesitation, pledged to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to bail relief funds dedicated to helping out detained protesters. She instantly received backlash, but in typical Teigen fashion, she engaged with and then quickly dismissed the haters.
This isn’t the first time (and it’s probably not the last either) that Trump and Teigen have brawled via Twitter. In September 2019, the internet blew up when Teigen fired back at the president when he called her “a filthy-mouthed sandwich maker.” Still, even that isn’t the origin of this feud.
Teigen had been trolling Trump long before his presidency had even begun. It was one subtweet in 2017 however, that read “Lolllllll no one likes you” which proved to be just enough banter for the new president-elect and landed Teigen a spot on the long list of profiles he has blocked from viewing his account.
Whether Trump was able to see her content Saturday night or not, Teigen kept tweeting, at one point, even doubling the amount she had originally pledged to donate. Over the course of Saturday night and spilling into Sunday, Teigen tweeted 17 times in support of activists while outwardly denouncing Trump. Teigen’s donation went directly to various bail funds designated for detained low-income protesters such as the Bail Project, National Lawyers Guild, and the Movement for Black Lives.
