Your Guide to Mastering the Power Blazer Trend

Raise your hand if you love a good power suit! The confidence projected by the trouser/blazer combo is what has made this piece a fashion staple for the past 10 decades. More recently, this look has taken a modern spin with influencers and supermodels alike sporting the power blazer. Though the rest of the traditional suit is, well, missing, it achieves the same effect. As COVID summer moves into COVID fall, this outerwear essential works as the perfect transition piece. Read on to learn how to style this trend for that next low-key outing, Insta shoot, or Zoom call.

The Oversized Double-Button Blazer

This style is a popular spin on the traditional blazer (and for good reason!). The looser fit makes it easy to layer additional pieces underneath, but the neckline gives it a clean finish.

How to style it? The benefit of an oversized jacket is that it gives more options for what goes underneath. In fact, a traditional blouse and trousers may bring this look down. Looking at the left photo, the pleated skirt flares at the bottom, breaking out of the boxy shape of this look. The fitted turtleneck strikes the right balance by complementing the volume below, and the use of black emphasizes the bold neckline on this blazer.

The Oversized Single Tone Blazer

Similarly to the first one, the fit of this blazer makes it an easy outfit go-to. The only difference is that the entire jacket is one color.

How to style it? This look can easily go monochrome, but the goal is to create dimension! Pairing this blazer with a bold print underneath will create a timeless look with a modern spin. (Tip: If patterns really aren’t your thing, go for a striking solid color that complements the blazer!)

The Quarter-Sleeve Blazer

The beauty of this style is that unlike the other two, it offers a tailored fit. The cropped sleeve gives a more casual feel, but the fit still makes it work-place appropriate.

How to style it? Because the hemline is higher, the piece underneath should be shorter in length. If the blazer ends at your hips then the undershirt should stop at or above your waist. This can be done by tucking it into pants or a skirt of choice. This high-waisted effect paired with the fitted blazer creates long lines and a chic look!

The benefit of choosing any of these styles is that they create options. While the power blazer is a capsule piece, essential regardless of the latest trends, it is not limited to being worn as a part of a traditional suit. Modern fashion has given us options like dresses, skirts and shorts to pair it with. These looks exude confidence while including the fun of fashion. The prints, colors and hemlines that go underneath can be a bold reflection of your personal style, so no matter which blazer you choose, you’ll always look (and be) powerful.
