Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez: Cash Grab or Quality Products?
If you’re anything like us, you’ll agree there’s no such thing as too much makeup. But as the beauty industry gets bigger and bigger, it makes you wonder how many of these products we actually need. I mean, come on, there can only be so many different types of foundation before they start doing the exact same thing, right? Maybe not.
Selena Gomez just released her beauty brand, Rare Beauty. There were some mixed reactions before the line dropped from both Gomez’s fans and beauty lovers. Some complained there are already too many celebrity makeup brands out these days, questioning whether Selena has even shown enough interest in beauty to justify making her own line.
On the other hand, Gomez has made it a priority to have people on her team that are experienced makeup artists. She is working with former executives from Too Faced, NYX and Hourglass. Some fans, however, are defending Gomez and expressing excitement for the launch of Rare Beauty.
Gomez says, “Being rare is about being comfortable with yourself,” explaining the brand's name. “I’ve stopped trying to be perfect. I just want to be me.” She also has a new song and album titled Rare.
The line dropped on September 3, and the results are in. Rare Beauty is receiving raving reviews across the board. Gomez posted the launch announcement on Instagram with the caption “I’ve been working on @rarebeauty for two years now, it’s something I’m really proud of -can’t believe I finally get to share it with you.” The line currently includes 48 shades of foundation and concealer, Blot & Glow touch up kit, two brushes and a sponge, a liquid blush, a primer, a luminizer, a setting mist, Dewy Lip balms, 12 shades of matte lip creams, a matte liquid liner and a brow pencil & gel duo, with intentions of more in the future.
The beauty community is also responding well for the most part. Some beauty gurus have called celebrity beauty brands “cash grabs” in the past, but Rare Beauty is being described as “high-quality” and “thoughtful.” The brand is also vegan and cruelty-free, and it offers reusable packaging.
One of the best parts of the brand is the meaning behind the packaging. All of the products have ball shapes at the top that are meant to help people who suffer from arthritis like Gomez. These “balls” are meant to make an easier grip to open the product. This is a subtle change in standard packing that can revolutionize the industry and promote more inclusivity, which there can never be enough of.
Overall, Rare Beauty seems to be genuine and is quickly proving itself as a legitimate beauty line. The line includes diverse shades and models, and between the products and Gomez’s focus on mental health, it’s safe to say that we have another celebrity beauty brand that is changing the game for the better.
