Beard Dye Might Just Be Your Next Beauty Secret

Ever since I was born, I’ve naturally had the blondest and lightest brows you can imagine. I remember kids in elementary school often asking if I even had brows. As the years have gone on, I’ve experimented with tons of products to enhance my natural brows without breaking the bank at a salon. Brows are such an important part of your face, and I just couldn’t stand them not being a standout.

My tried and true secret to great brows comes from an unsuspecting product, Just for Men’s temporary Mustache and Beard Dye. This simple product can transform your brows from drab to fab in just 3-5 minutes and costs less than $10 a box. You can find it at Target, Walmart and most drugstores. Tinting your brows will naturally darken your hairs without needing to pack on excessive products such as brow pomades, gels, powders and pencils. Using a tint helps you see your brow hairs better and even fills in any sparse areas.

Here’s our guide to tinting your brows at home with. Yep, you guessed it… beard dye. Guess it’s not just for men after all!

STEP 1: Select Your Shade

  • Light blonde/platinum hair colors: Choose the Light Brown shade. If you’re nervous, you can try Blond, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t make too much of a difference. You’ll get better color payoff using Light Brown for a shorter amount of time.

  • Medium blonde/golden blonde: Go for Light Brown or Medium Brown depending on the lightness/darkness preference for your brows.

  • Dirty blonde or balayage: Medium Brown! Gives dimension without being too dark.

  • Light brown/medium brown: Medium Brown or Dark Brown. Dark Brown will last longer but will come off more harsh at first. Medium Brown is a safer choice and works for nearly every shade of brunette.

  • Dark brunette/black: Use Black or Darkest Brown. Be careful with the black, and go lighter on the product in the front of your brows. Believe me, you do not want that Sharpie brow look.

STEP 2: Do an allergy/patch test

Sample a tiny swatch of the product on your skin to see if there is any irritation or reaction. Safety first, my friends.

STEP 3: Mix!
Squeeze out equal-sized drops of the color and developer, then mix them together with a Q-tip. You don’t need a lot of product! I only use about a pea-sized drop of both color and developer.

STEP 4: Application

  • Use an angled eyebrow brush. A word of advice: Definitely avoid using your good Morphe or Anastasia Beverly Hills brushes for the dye, as it tends to stain the brush. A tiny eyebrow brush by e.l.f. Or Wet & Wild will work great (and they only cost around $2 each)!

  • Pick up a bit of the dye with the brush and begin applying from the tail and arch of the brow, blending toward the front. The majority of the product should be in this arch and tail portion of the brow rather than the front. This creates more of a natural look and avoids that fake boxy brow shape.

  • Careful around your eyes! Beard dye and eyeballs aren’t a good mix.

  • Leave on for 3-5 minutes, then wipe off with facial cleanser and micellar water of choice. Micellar water won’t pull out any hairs and is a great gentle cleansing agent!

STEP 5: Check your brows and reapply if necessary

That’s it! This process is super easy and can definitely be much better, budget-friendly alternative to getting your brows professionally dyed. The dye should last about 1-2 weeks depending upon how dark you like your brows and how long your dye developed for. Now you’ve got freshly tinted brows and don’t have to worry about spending time on them in the morning!
