I Used my Own Closet to Recreate 5 TikTok Aesthetics

If you’ve ever scrolled through TikTok, you’ve probably seen some fashion gurus talking about different “aesthetics” or showing various outfits of completely different styles. These videos are frequently paired with the sound, “Sometimes I want to be her, but then sometimes I want to be her, or her,” and so on.

Well, I was wondering how many of these different aesthetics I could create from my own closet in my college apartment. Plus, some of my clothes are just not getting enough love during quarantine... sigh. So, after scrolling through the fashion side of TikTok for hours, I’ve found the most popular aesthetics: angelic/soft, e-girl, Y2K, hippie, and 90s. Let’s give them a try!

Angelic

I started with the aesthetic I thought would be easiest to recreate in my closet: angelic/soft/girly. But, I quickly found I was going to have to enlist the help of my roommates since I didn’t have exactly the right pieces to put this look together.

For this look, I styled a Forever 21 babydoll dress, a hair scarf from amazon and some white kitten heels from NastyGal.

Overall, I’m happy with how this look came out. I felt so sassy and feminine and could totally see myself wearing it again!

90s

Next, I decided I wanted to play around with styles from different decades. I channeled my inner Rachel Green for this outfit and absolutely loved it.

I wore some of my favorite wide-leg Citizens jeans and layered a basic Brandy Melville black tank over a white crop top from Princess Polly. To finish the look, I threw my hair in a high pony with a scrunchie… and I actually want to wear this to class tomorrow.

Y2K

On to the next decade! The early 2000s was absolutely iconic for fashion, and it’s my favorite era of fashion to see people sporting today. I could actually watch Y2K fashion TikToks for hours!

Luckily, one of my roommates is also all about this style, so I borrowed one of her graphic crop tees from Urban and paired it with a bright sweater from Princess Polly. I wore this with a white skirt that I’ve had forever and a pair of NastyGal heels. This outfit made me feel like a QUEEN. I couldn’t stop saying “as if” while wearing it… seriously.

Hippie

I’m honestly surprised that this style is so big on TikTok right now. I’ve always loved a good flare jean, but I definitely feel like this aesthetic was more popular a few years back.

Luckily, I was huge into this style about 2 or 3 years ago so I had everything right in my closet for this Mamma-Mia-inspired look. I pulled out my favorite flare jeans from Show Me Your Mumu and paired it with a tie crop top from 12th Tribe.

I loved this outfit, but it didn’t seem like anything that out of the ordinary for me.

E-girl

I seriously debated even including this outfit because I hated it so much. Don’t get me wrong, some girls can totally pull it off, but I am just not one of those girls. TikTok always likes to talk about the E-girl look, but this grunge look didn’t do it for me.

For this, I threw on one of my fav graphic tees from Urban and some distressed Levi’s jeans. I really tried to go all out with the accessories for this; I wore a beanie from Urban, a thick gold chain from Free People and my Docs to tie the whole look together.

I now understand why TikTok influencers always make these videos on different aesthetics. I had so much fun putting together completely different outfits, and now I actually want to wear some of these out!
