It’s finally October which means the spooky season is officially upon us. Who doesn’t love the decorations, treats, and costumes which accompany this time of the year? For those of us who crave a good fright, the best Halloween festivity entails late nights spent scaring yourself shitless by watching a good horror movie with some friends. Scary movies are also the perfect opportunity to snuggle up with your new boo. We have compiled a list of the top ten scary season movies to see this Halloween season so you don’t have to waste any time debating which one to watch.
Hereditary (2018)
If you have an appetite for the deeply unsettling, Hereditary is the movie for you. Midsommar’s director Ari Aster pulled out all the stops for this freakshow of a film. Hereditary makes up for its lack of sudden jump scares with a psychologically disturbed storyline which will leave the most weathered horror veterans unnerved for days. Hereditary scored a respectable 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, a testament to the film’s impressively deranged nature.
The Invisible Man (2020)
Fans of The Handmaids Tale will hardly recognize Elizabeth Moss in this twisted science fiction horror film, which was inspired by H. G. Wells’s famous novel. The story follows a terrified woman who is convinced she is being stalked by the ghost of her abusive boyfriend. With an impressive 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (not to mention the fact that it stars the queen herself), this is a must-see film this spooky season.
Saint Maud (2021)
This British psychological horror scored a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes for its chilling and unique approach to frightening audiences. The film follows a religious young hospice nurse who becomes obsessed with saving the souls of her dying patient no matter how disturbing the cost may be.
Ready Or Not (2019)
If you enjoy a side of comedy with your horror, Ready Or Not is the perfect scary movie for you this Halloween season. Scoring an 88% on Rotton Tomatoes for the ridiculously entertaining (if not slightly startling) experience this film offers. Ready Or Not follows the story of a girl who has recently married the man of her dreams. All seems well and fine until she is forced to run through the woods all night while her new hubby’s rich yet bizarre family hunts her down like a wild animal. Must have been a bit of a damper on the wedding festivities, don’t you think?
His House (2020)
Scoring an astonishing 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, His House is a brilliantly original terror film that is not for the faint of heart. The story follows a young couple that manages to flee a war-torn Sudan only to be tormented by a supernatural entity in their new English home. We highly suggest you do not watch this one by yourself.
The Babadook (2014)
This Australian thriller is straight-up creepy, just ask its 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film tells the story of a young boy and his recently widowed mother navigating their grief. When a strange children’s book titled The Babadook randomly appears in the house, the boy and his mother quickly realize that the monster in the book is not simply fiction. The Babadook’s monstrous personification of loss is brilliantly crafted, viscerally moving, and genuinely thrilling.
It Follows (2014)
David Robert Mitchell’s supernatural thriller, It Follows, is basically a terrifying tale of caution concerning unprotected sex. After a carefree teenager sleeps with her boyfriend for the first time, she is haunted by freaky-ass dreams. She quickly realizes that she is the most recent recipient of a supernatural curse that is passed from person to person through intercourse. This psychological fright works on multiple levels, and it’s cleverly crafted storyline was awarded a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Drag Me To Hell (2009)
This late 2000s horror film tells the story of a struggling young bank manager who refuses to loan to a creepy old lady. In response, the witchy woman places a curse on the bank manager’s girlfriend. This occasionally comedic and often shocking film won a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes for its effective jumpscares and entertaining storyline.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance in this cult classic which combines teenage struggle with an iconic soundtrack and grippingly creepy plotline. Featuring everything from giant demonic rabbits to the undeniable appeal of a young Jake Gyllenhaal, this science fiction psychological horror is a must-see for any fight night movie marathon. Additionally, this electrifying yet disturbed film received a respectable 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It Comes At Night (2017)
This slow-burn film follows two families that have been forced to live together in a secluded house while the outside world is ravaged by some unknown threat. By examining the darkest aspects of human nature, It Comes At Night probes at the horrors unleashed by humans when they are put into extreme conditions. This psychological thriller was awarded an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes for its powerful delivery and lingering disturb.
