Wishing You Were Studying Abroad? Us Too.

If you’re anything like us, your entire Instagram feed is filled with friends posting pictures about their current study abroad experiences. Beautiful beaches, picturesque cityscapes, delicious food… and it seems never ending. As much as we love Elon, these posts are making us feel major FOMO! While buying a one way ticket to one of these places might be the most tempting option, we have created a list of some more viable things you can do to cope.

GO ON DAY TRIPS AND WEEKEND GETAWAYS

Day trips and weekend getaways are a great way to get outside the Elon bubble to do something new and exciting. Don’t worry, there are plenty of other things to do outside of Elon than go to Hanging Rock (if you haven’t been we still recommend this!). We are in a great location in North Carolina surrounded by plenty of nearby cities, mountains and beaches to explore.

START PLANNING YOUR NEXT VACATION

Find inspiration to plan your next dream vacation. There are so many places in the world to explore, so narrowing it down and deciding what you want to do and see can take some time. We love planning vacations, because it gives us something to look forward to in the future and is a great way to fill our thoughts in the meantime.

ESCAPE THROUGH MOVIES, TV OR BOOKS

Sometimes getting caught up in a movie, tv show or book that is based around your dream destination is a perfect way to immerse yourself in the city and culture without actually leaving home. We recommend putting your phone aside, getting cozy and pretending you are actually there. While these movies, tv shows or books might not fully (or accurately) capture your destination in mind, remember that the posts you see on your Instagram don’t necessarily either!

HOST THEMED DINNERS

One of our favorite things about traveling is indulging in the delicious local food, but if you can’t actually travel abroad the next best option is cooking and baking as if you were there. Do some research about the local cuisine of your desired city, queue some themed music, invite friends over, cook to your heart’s desire and pretend you are abroad for the evening!

We know that nothing can replace the experience of being abroad, but we hope some of these suggestions can help you beat the FOMO. If you try any of them out, be sure to tag @theedgemag in your photos!
