How to Revamp Your Style
Since I was little, I always remember people telling me I had a good sense of style. This led me to dressing for other people. I would spend too much time standing in my closet wondering if people at school would like what I was wearing. Even with these compliments, I still found myself constantly comparing my style to those around me. I realized the more I tried to impress others, the more I lost my sense of style. Before we jump into the meat of this piece, let’s get one thing straight: style is completely subjective. It’s always fun to find inspiration in fashion. But, at the end of the day, you have to wear what you feel comfortable in. So, let’s get into the three tips that will help you improve your style.
Tip 1: Organization
Before you go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, first work with what you already have in your closet. Go through all of your pieces and figure out what you wear the most and what you barely wear. But wait! Don’t throw out the clothes you wear the least just yet. Organize your closet so that the clothes you wear the most are towards the front. For a few months, try to see if you can incorporate the clothes you normally don’t wear into your wardrobe—before you decide to donate them.
Tip 2: Research
We’re still not to the fun part—but don’t worry, we’ll get there. Next, you should research what style you want to emulate. This does not mean you have to copy someone’s complete look, but it is nice to have a direction you want to go in when it’s time to finally shop. So, how do you do this kind of research? My go-to is always Pinterest. You can find almost anything on Pinterest, especially when it comes to fashion. Some people don’t like Pinterest because you sometimes don’t know the source of the pictures on there. If that sounds like you, you can follow fashion accounts on Instagram. Find people who you feel have a similar style or someone you see as a fashion icon. My personal favorites are @best.dressed and @isthisfate. Another great resource is TikTok, which has increasingly become more fashion forward. You can also grab editorial inspiration from magazines like Vogue or through events such as Fashion Week.
Tip 3: Shopping!
Ah, the part we’ve all been waiting for. Buying new clothes can always be exciting, but sometimes we can get carried away. Try to buy items that are easy to style multiple ways instead of buying outfits you’ll only wear once. Some staple closet items can be a white tee or button down, jeans, a little black dress, and some kind of sneaker. A perfect store for basic tees and jeans is Madewell, but I know they tend to be overpriced, so H&M is another great option. These items can easily be worn in many different ways and for different occasions. Everything in your closet does not have to be memorable.
