Four Unwritten Fashion Rules to Break
1. Don’t Mix Metals
Do you wear gold and silver jewelry together? I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions about mixing metals—mostly negative thoughts. Some people tell me it's their pet peeve, that gold and silver jewelry should always be worn separately . . . I disagree. I’ve found two ways to mix metals and I think it can take your accessory game to the next level.
2. Say No to Double Denim
I see why there's controversy surrounding double denim; it can go wrong easily. I tried styling a double denim outfit earlier this fall, and it was tricky. There are all different shades and textures of denim and on top of that, you have to find pants and jackets that fit the right way, then it all has to mesh together. I’m not obsessed with the way my outfit turned out, but I still think it's a rule worth breaking because I’ve seen others pull it off so well.
Influencer Lissy Roddy is one of those people. Both her denim pieces are from Boohoo Man, so the color of denim matches flawlessly. Double denim is something to experiment with and wear different ways. Don’t follow any rules: wear different shades of denim, different styles of jeans, etc. Try different combinations and have fun with it.
3. Sweatpants Are Only For the House
If there's a year of fashion to prove this rule wrong, it's 2020 and 2021. Loungewear has never been so popular, and sweatpants are the new work pants. There are now endless places to buy sweats and so many different ways to keep them casual or dress them up. A simple way to make sweats more formal is to add a dress shirt or blazer and you're good to go. I’m all for terminating this rule and keeping sweatpants around.
4. Whites are Only for Warmer Months
I’m curious as to how this rule came about because I couldn’t disagree more. Whites and creams are elegant colors that should be worn all year. This fall, I styled white trouser pants from Zara that I think can be worn in any season depending on how you wear them. I added some dark colors to add a fall feel and topped it off with a black and white tweed bucket hat that pulled all the colors together.
Don’t be afraid to wear a full white or cream outfit. Influencer Debora Rosa pictured above pulls off a sleek, clean outfit that's light and bright. A white or cream sweater looks fresh while giving off cozy and fall vibes.
Overall, never shy away from breaking any other “rules” or deviating from trends. Our favorite fashion icons are the ones who surprise me and know how to think outside the box.
