Quick Adventures Right Around the Corner

It’s early March and you’ve been stuck in your dorm room for several weeks now because of dreary days and restrictions set in place for the virus. As spring rolls around and days get warmer, the campus is buzzing with a plethora of activities, (majority virtual of course), but you need to get away…even if only for the day. And you have a limited budget and above all, want to stay healthy. Where can you go? What can you do? We know of two exciting and safe excursions that you can do in one afternoon. Imagine this: A 65° Saturday with the gorgeous Carolina Blue sky taunting, practically begging you to play and your craving to bask in the rays is at an all-time high. For those who enjoy the outdoors and being one with nature, you’ll want to visit Hanging Rock State Park in Danbury. On the contrary, imagine a rainy day where you’re just itching to do anything because staying inside has you stir crazy and uninspired. If putting sneakers and leggings on doesn’t feel right for the day and you’d rather dress up, shop, and strike a pose, Rich Girls Collection & Museum in Greensboro offers extravagant shopping, eclectic rooms, and funky backdrops for you and your crew to snag some stunning shots for the gram.

Located in the Sauratown Mountain Range in Danbury, only a 90-minute drive from campus, Hanging Rock State Park is 24 acres of rustic paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Majestic peaks of the Sauratown Mountains rise from 1,700 to 2,500 feet in elevation, overlooking the surrounding countryside. Leave the stuffy dorms behind and breathe in the crispy air with a walk amidst Carolina and Canadian hemlock. Hike along and explore more than 20 miles of trails-- you’ll marvel at several cascading waterfalls (fan favorites include Window Falls and Hidden Falls on the 3.6 mile Indian Creek Trail). If you’re feeling adventurous, there is fishing on the Dan River, areas for rock climbing, and biking trails weaving throughout the park. The most well-known part of the park is the notorious “hanging rock” itself where you can take pictures to form the illusion that you are dangling off a cliff! Admission to the park is free, and you can enter and leave the park from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Be sure to take a striking photo and tag @theedgemag so we can all enjoy a little fresh air too.

If you’re in a more glamorous mood and want to shop, dress up, and document your time to spice up your feed, Rich Girls Collection & Museum should be next on your list. The 30-minute drive to Rich Girls Collection & Museum located at 4000 Spring Garden Street, Suite M, in Greensboro is well worth it. From there, you can channel your inner Vogue, and explore the eight unique photo rooms with backdrops ranging from a champagne room to a suite with a plump red-lips shaped couch. Find your look, and begin your shoot, but you’ll need to check your humility at the door. The Rich Girls Museum promotes creativity and imagination, as you pose in front of varied and dazzling backdrops. Although you’ll be glamming for the camera, Covid restrictions are in place for your safety. Of course, there’s always a bedazzled mask. The Rich Girls Museum is open from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Thursday to Sunday, but there is a $30 entrance fee. After you call your agent in New York, don’t forget to tag @theedgemag so we can see the final edit!
