Ideas for the Most Unconventional Spring Break
As we enter the month of March there’s one thing on everyone’s mind - Spring Break. This coming March marks the second spring break since the pandemic began and its arrival has left many feeling tense or disjointed. None of us envisioned that we would be entering yet another Spring season with the same disdain we left the last one, but here we are, and we’re in it together. Though Covid-19 is unfortunately still a part of our current reality, I think we can all agree that the circumstances this year are far better than the last and that in itself is something to be optimistic about.
Depending on where you attend school spring break may have been shortened or even eliminated altogether. But that doesn’t have to stop you, and shouldn’t stop you, from enjoying all the simple pleasures that the spring season has to offer. With the flowers blooming and the rays beaming on your skin for the first time in months, there’s plenty to look forward to. While it’s recommended to keep travel to a minimum, there are many enjoyable staycation ideas that will provide the mental health break you so rightly deserve. Make sure you prioritize self-care and take a break every once in a while, even if it is just for the day.
Make it a Spa Day
Whether you get a group of friends together and take a trip to the spa or set up a spa-like experience in your home, getting pampered is the perfect way to decompress. Soak away the stress of the first half of the semester with a well-earned pedicure or soothing massage. Light some candles and lather a face mask on and enjoy a lazy day of watching classics or reading a personal favorite. This will allow you to end your day with an improved sense of well-being and hopefully, begin the following morning feeling fresh and rejuvenated.
Vacation Rentals
Renting a beach house or cabin nearby with some close friends might just be the distraction you need before returning to the rigid reality of spring semester. Sometimes even just a switch-up in the environment will help more than you could ever realize, to get your mind off of all the problems lingering at home. Bring some cards and a few friends and maybe even order some takeout and you’re guaranteed to have a great night. This can be done safely as long you keep the group size to a minimum and practice Covid safety guidelines, such as social distancing when possible and wearing a mask when necessary.
Take a Road Trip
While flying poses a great threat that doesn’t mean you’re entirely stuck at home. Round up a couple of friends and get creative with your itinerary. If it’s nice and cool out, look into some campsites and relieve some stress surrounded by mother nature and enjoy a slumber under the stars. Use this time to observe new places, and enjoy each other's company. Make sure to stop along the way to take in any stunning views.
Outdoor Activities
As Laura Ingalls Wilder once said, “Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.” As the warmer weather approaches it is the ideal time to be outside. While there are endless activities that you can take part in outdoors, some of our favorites are: having a picnic with friends by a lake or in a flower field, hammocking with a guilty pleasure read, or going for a hike.
This has been a tough year for us all but we can still make the best of the hand we were dealt. Whether your spring break is two days or simply just a weekend, be sure to make time for yourself and focus on your own needs. Even one day of self-care or leisure can go a long way.
