Pro Tips to Making a Capsule Wardrobe

Spring cleaning is upon us, everybody. With that comes a lot of stress, de-cluttering, and, of course, closet clean-outs. Now whether you’re looking to make a capsule wardrobe so you can tidy up your closet, go on a trip, or just do it for fun, there are some things you should know. “What is a capsule wardrobe?” you might ask. A capsule wardrobe is when you choose 30-40 pieces (yes, it includes shoes too) and that’s all you wear for the season. The pieces should be similar when it comes to color scheme so that you can ~mix and match~ outfits for DAYS. Another perk of a capsule wardrobe is that they’re supposed to help cut down on impulse buys (which is super helpful when you have a ~passion for fashion~ like us, if you know what we mean!). When thinking about creating said capsule wardrobe, it can seem daunting. That why we’re here and we have some tips to keep in mind while making a capsule wardrobe of your own!!

For tops, you need to have a mixture of graphic tees, plain tees, sweaters, and blouses. We recommend having one to two graphic tees that you can pair with almost any bottoms or even maybe a little ~t-shirt tied over your dress~ look. A few plain tops would be great for layering or pairing with a more playful pant. Sweaters are also a great addition to your capsule wardrobe for the colder months— if you like sweaters maybe go with more of those and less plain tees! Three blouses or more elegant tops would be nice to have as well just in case you have a meeting or dinner party to go to!

Your favorite pair of jeans, a pair or two of patterned pants (or shorts if that’s more your vibe) and a skirt or two are perfect for your new capsule wardrobe! However, when we say patterned, make sure they stick to the general color scheme you are going for or else that will be a wasted space for another piece that might be necessary for your closet.

Dresses will be more of a fun appetizer to your wardrobe rather than the main course. Find about four dresses you love that match the aesthetic of your closet and run with ‘em baby.

Even though this is a smaller closet, we cannot LIVE without a few statement pieces! This is your time to play—think corsets, a fun jacket, maybe even a pair of bold shoes you love and can’t live without. Whatever it is, make sure it doesn’t take up the majority of what you include in your wardrobe—we are trying to keep it simple here.

Five pairs of neutral shoes are perfect for this wardrobe. We recommend a pair of sneakers (not to be basic, but make them white), booties, sandals, heels, and any other pair of shoes you think will be necessary in your capsule wardrobe!

Finally, we can’t forget about COMFY CLOTHES <3!!! This is a capsule wardrobe for everything so this is where you can pick a favorite pair of sweatpants, leggings, sweatshirts, etc. that you’re only planning on wearing at home. We recommend picking out four to five pieces to make sure you have enough!!
