New Trend Alert- Pearl Necklaces
Are pearl necklaces back? It looks like it! Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, Rihanna, and Harry Styles, have all been seen sporting the iconic statement piece that is pearls necklaces! But pearls aren’t a new trend- they are old, like 420 BC old and before the Hadid’s picked them up they were worn by fashion icons like Princess Diana and Coco Chanel.
Pearls are actually the world's oldest gem, and with that title comes a loooong history. Pearl necklaces were presented to the Chinese as gifts dating as far back as 2300 BC! In Ancient Rome they were the ultimate status symbol, so much so that Julius Caesar passed a law that only allowed the ruling class to wear them. Over the years pearls even became the center of myths, a popular one taking place during the Dark Ages, where pearls were thought to be a protection charm, leading knights to wear pearls necklaces on the battlefield in hopes to boost their chances of survival.
Pearl necklaces have gone through so many renaissances in history that it almost isn’t fair to call them a new trend - but more an inevitable trend. They are so popular because they add an effortless level of style to any outfit! Pearl necklaces are not the exclusive jewelry that they used to be (Rome has fallen, you don't have to be in the ruling class to wear them!) and are no longer solely for extravagant nights out. In fact, for Rihanna, a pearl necklace was the perfect pairing for her outfit to go grocery shopping; Harry Styles will pair them with just about anything but has especially perfect the T-shirt and pearl necklace combo.
So don’t let anything, especially price, stop you from incorporating this iconic necklace into your everyday looks, and check out some of the amazing ways small businesses have redefined pearl necklaces on Etsy without making a dent in your savings!
And don’t stress about whether or not the pearls are real and do as Coco Chanel did: wear fake ones!
