The 2021 Met Gala Review by The Edge Fashion Team.

The most iconic and glamorous night of the year returned and every star who attended brought their A-game. The Met Gala is an annual celebration of fashion, organized by Vouge Editor-and-Chief, Anna Wintour. It is considered a fundraiser for the Metropolitan of Art’s Costume Institute. The 2021 Gala theme was “American Independence” according to vogue this theme was meant to reflect “America’s gusty, adventurous sartorial spirit. That freedom allowed for a range of interpretations”.

With all that said, The Edge Fashion team has put together a list of our favorite looks from the night!

Lydia: Barbie Ferreira

Barbie Ferreria did NOT disappoint at this year’s ever-so-glamorous Met Gala. She embodied an old-Hollywood, Burlesque, great Gatsby allure all wrapped into one. Her look was inspired specifically by 1920’s fashion in America. Her jaw-dropping Met debut was a Jonathan Simkhai gown, covered in pearl detailing with a tasseled bottom and both off-the-shoulder and halter style necklines. The smaller details of this look, like the three small pearls dropping from the center of her perfectly crafted hair-do, are what I think pulled the vision together. In my opinion, Barbie Ferreira stole the show (in the best way possible) at the 2021 Met Gala.

Avery: Kaia Gerber

Kaia Gerber’s gown at the Met Gala is exactly what I would want to wear if I ever attended. She looked absolutely STUNNING. Gerber wanted to recreate Bianca Jagger’s 1981 Met Gala look originally designed by Dior. Oscar de la Renta designed Gerber’s dress this year and hairstylist, Guido Palau, helped mimic the dramatic waves Jagger once wore as well. I truly gasped when I saw this.

Emily: Adut Akech

Adut Akech understood the assignment with her clean yet edgy suit at this year's Met Gala. She strutted the scene with a Michael Kors two-piece suit with a bra top bedazzled in rhinestones which added a sparkly touch to the all-white suit. My favorite part of her look was her jewelry. She paired her killer outfit with Pasquale Bruni’s white floral accessories. My personal favorite was her diamond floral choker that matched so well with the entire outfit. Because who doesn’t love diamond flowers?! As if the outfit and accessories weren’t enough, she incorporated the American theme too!  Akech rocked a mullet hairstyle; yes rocking a mullet is possible, and she pulled it off!

Emma: Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid outdid herself at this year’s Met Gala. She is wearing a white column dress from Prada, with a long slit in the back with leather gloves. To me, Gigi Hadid truly captured this year’s theme, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. This dress gives me the vibes of old Hollywood but, the leather gloves truly make this dress modernized. The leather gloves and sheer tights that peak through the thigh-high slit in the back add an edgy vibe to an otherwise simple look. Not only did she perfect her look to the tee with this dress, but her high, red ponytail is everything and more. I am obsessed with this look and I personally think, Gigi Hadid won the Met Gala red carpet.

Elizabeth: Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz sent shock waves throughout the city when she showed up to the Met Gala in a gorgeous Yves Saint Laurent dress made out of rhinestones and chainmail - putting a literal meaning of clothing being modern-day armor. Kravitzs’ bold look exuded body positivity and female empowerment, a trend that will hopefully continue to be at the top of the list for designers in the future.

Madison: Anok Yai

Anok Yai dazzles the Met Gala in Oscar de la Renta and Ana Khouri jewelry. This dress to me screams quintessential old American Hollywood with a modern twist. The sleek silhouette, long gloves, and feathered cape detail are reminiscent of a classic 50s red carpet look of luxury. I also absolutely love the star jeweled detailing throughout the dress, a nod to the theme “American Independence.”

Sasha: Imaan Hammam

Sheer was one of the biggest trends of this year's Met Gala. Imaan Hammam gave us one of those moments. She featured a bare embroidered star cutout dress that expressed the American flag. The vintage Atelier Versace dress detailed a sheer bodice with a white tulle skirt. She paired this gown with timeless Tiffany and Co diamonds. The best part about this look was the Italian-made shoes from Aquazzura which were a perfect mix between extravaganza and a glistening pop of gems.

Abby: Emily Ratajowski

Emily Ratajowski could not be missed in this fiery red moment by Vera Wang. In this 2021 Met Gala, sheer is very in and she took her show-stopping figure and chose a perfect gown. She paired this look with sheer gloves that featured more of the delicate embroidery. The off the shoulder look as well as the plunging neckline gave her an opportunity to flaunt her body even though she has recently had a baby. Not only does Ratajowski never miss, but this dress was also very on-brand for her as she can be seen as racy at times. Nothing beats a classic red done right.
