The Watcher
Here is yet another show rising to the top of Netflix’s charts, just shortly after the rise of “Dahmer.” The Watcher is a new horror thriller show on Netflix following the true story of the Broaddus family.
In Westfield New Jersey, the Broaddus family bought a new house and shortly after, began receiving stalker letters in their mailbox targeting their family. In the show, the family is called the Brannocks.
In the seven-episode season, the letters come rapidly and in every episode, but in the true story, there were only a total of four letters.
The first one came a few days after the family bought the house. The second came a few weeks later. The third was about a month after that, and the fourth didn't come until about three years later when the family was trying to sell the house.
The Netflix show is very jarring and seems unbelievable, so when you're watching and suddenly remember that it's based on a true story, it's shocking.
The show begins with a family moving into 657 Boulevard and after weird encounters with the neighbors and just an overall weird vibe, they begin to receive these notes that are admiring the house but also talking about it in an off manner.
In the show, random people and weird neighbors would show up in the house, and the Brannock family didn't know how they were getting in. In real life, they never had random people show up inside the house but the alarm was tripped a few times from inside the house.
A suspect in the show was the security man who came to set up the cameras around the house and begins dating the Brannock daughter, causing more drama and suspense. In the show, the security man, Dakota, drew suspicion because he had a video game account with his gamer name being “The Watcher” which, as far as we know, was just a coincidence, In the true story they did talk to a security man, but he wasn't as big of a character.
The police saw a couple sitting outside of the house and the boyfriend was the one who had the video game name “The Watcher.”
How was this case never solved? There were so many apparent suspects.
The Netflix story is entertaining and keeps people intrigued, but how realistic was it? After recently watching the series, there have been many theories on who the true “Watcher” is.
