The Best Weekend Getaways for Elon Students

We have nearly made it out of seasonal depression and dark skies at 5 p.m. We can barely see the spring season peeking through and it’s exciting. We know the work week can feel draining, which is why a little weekend getaway is a perfect way to destress, decompress, and see new places. As weekends grow warmer and you are itching to escape campus, here are the best weekend getaways to escape the Elon bubble.

Charlotte, NC — Distance: 111 mi / 1h 40min

As much as we love the small town atmosphere Elon provides us, it’s nice to experience a city environment. Charlotte is a major city and commercial hub of the state, with major attractions, shopping, sports, art, culture, and nightlife. Charlotte is home to the world's tallest and fastest Giga coaster at Carowinds Amusement Park, as well as the largest man-made white-water river in the U.S. National White-Water Center. The city also buzzes with musicians, extravagant speakeasies, and local breweries. If you have the time, make sure to visit some of the fashion-forward boutiques Charlotte has to offer. Whether you are going to Charlotte for adventure or relaxation, we can guarantee that you will enjoy it.

Boone, NC — Distance: 132 mi / 2h 10min

While the mountains may not be your top choice when it comes to relaxing getaway, Boone has a lot to offer for you and your friends in the spring. Once the weather begins to warm up, Boone is the best place for hiking and admiring stunning views. Boone is also home to amazing breweries, locally-owned shops, and the Linville Caverns.

Carolina Beach, NC — Distance: 203 mi / 3h 10min

Carolina Beach is just what any college student is looking for right now. Needing an escape right now is normal. Laying down on a beach with your eyes closed and the sun peering across your face might be the perfect escape from reality. While Wrightsville Beach is only 193 miles away from campus, it is often packed umbrella to umbrella. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, we would highly recommend driving those extra 10 miles. This trip can easily be accomplished in a day for those who want to avoid spending money.

Charleston, SC — Distance: 316 mi / 4h 33min

If you are willing to make the drive, Charleston is unmatched. Charleston is a port city founded in 1670 and is unique for its cobblestone streets, pastel houses, and horse-drawn carriages throughout the city. While Charleston is a city, it feels quaint and digestible. The city is perfect for a weekend getaway to stroll through the Battery promenade, walk along Waterfront Park, and shop at local boutiques along King Street. A weekend trip will allow you to experience Charleston’s nightlife: containing unique speakeasies and trendy rooftop bars.
