The Pete Davidson Effect
If you haven't heard about Hollywood’s newest and arguably most random “it” couple, you’re probably living under a rock. Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson have been taking the world by storm since October. This has recently brought up the conversation surrounding Pete Davidson and his ability to continue securing romantic relationships with women deemed ‘out of his league’.
Davidson got his rise to stardom from Saturday Night Live, and this was boosted by his 2018 whirlwind relationship with Ariana Grande. Before the pair very famously broke up, they were engaged for several months. Grande is often credited with starting the Pete Davidson ‘trend’.
When this relationship first began, many people quickly became haters. Ariana Grande is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women of our generation, however Pete’s look was more unconventional. He was judged for his tattoos, bleached hair, painted nails, under-eye bags, and much more. Society refused to accept the idea that maybe Pete just had a really great personality, and became obsessed with picking apart his physical appearance instead.
With the fact that Pete is a very well-known comedian, it’s surprising that people weren’t able to write that off as the reason he became such a hot commodity, and just forget about it. Pete moved on from Ariana to Kate Beckinsale, another very conventionally attractive woman. This trend continued with Margaret Qualley, Kaia Gerber, Phoebe Dynover and now Kim Kardashian. Each time society grew more and more confused and curious as to how Pete pulled it off.
This says a lot about our society and the way many people prioritize physical characteristics in their partner. Pete radiates energy that suggests he’s a very enjoyable person to spend time with. That's likely why he’s many women’s first choice after ending a serious and toxic relationship. Ariana Grande, who shared an on-again off-again relationship with the late Mac Miller, found her way into Pete’s arms very easily.
Grande became obsessed with her new love interest, and even dedicated an entire song to him on her Sweetener album. She seemed happier than ever, and very content with her life. She was learning to live life more carefree, with the help of Davidson and his goofy personality. History soon repeated itself when Kim Kardashian and Kanye West called it quits.
Kim had been suffering for years and did everything she could to stand by her husband. She let it tear her apart until she was at her breaking point. Happiness has been restored for Kim ever since she found Pete. It might not be because of his looks or status, he just knows how to treat a woman and make her laugh.
For many of these women of Pete’s past, he is something new and thrilling, even a little dangerous. He has a bad-boy persona, thanks to the tattoos, that adds dimension and makes him mysterious. It’s perfectly normal for these beautiful women to go after someone like that. It might even help them feel more free, especially from past relationships.
Pete’s relationships have helped emphasize the fact that society places too much pressure on physical characteristics when seeking romantic partners. He might not be the most conventionally attractive celebrity but he’s not a bad looking guy. Everyone needs to stop pretending he isn’t hot just because he doesn’t look like everyone else in Hollywood. There should never have been a conversation around his physical attractiveness from the start.
In the past few years he’s become one of the most sought after celebrities. It’s interesting to watch how society can shift from judging someone so harshly for something one minute, and then suddenly praise them for it the next. This is what happened with Pete and his look. Thanks to the Kardashians, it’s now considered trendy for guys to bleach their hair, paint their nails and so much more of Pete’s original persona.
Pete has had an interesting experience under the public spotlight the past few years. He’s publicly battled mental illnesses as well as Crohn’s disease, and has done so graciously. It’s exciting to see who he’ll end up with next, or if Kim is the one.
