Take Proper Care of Your Hair

Hair washing is a part of our everyday lives, and as we get older it is important to understand the proper way to care for our hair.

In today's day and age, hair coloring and styling are very prevalent. Many people, especially women, color their hair in some way. Whether it be a full dye, highlights, or balayage, colored hair needs proper upkeep to stay happy and healthy.

From a young age, many people are told by their parents that they only need “a quarter size” amount of shampoo and conditioner. This never seemed like enough, because many don’t understand the proper way to apply them.

While it may seem like a simple task, the way you shampoo and condition can have a big effect on your hair.

To maximize the benefits of your hair products, it’s important to first emulsify your shampoo before applying it to your hair. This means after pouring roughly a quarter-sized blob of shampoo onto the hand, you need to rub your hands together to create suds for roughly ten seconds. Another benefit of this process is that it allows the shampoo to spread evenly, leading to an even cleanse.

When applying shampoo to your hair, it’s important to focus only on the scalp. This means avoiding applying shampoo to the ends of your hair. It is most important to focus on the scalp because that is where oils and dirt builds up within our hair. Doing this will help to get rid of the greasy hair look!

Three minutes is typically the time that stylists recommend people spend scrubbing their hair with shampoo. After initially putting shampoo on the scalp, it is important to again rinse your hair to help create suds. Once you’ve scrubbed for those three minutes, you are free to rinse it out!

Conditioning is the easy part. Again, only a quarter-size glob is needed. Since conditioner is really meant to detangle hair, it can be applied to the ends of our hair. Running hands through the hair during the application process can help to rid of knots and tangles that may be present.

Last, but most definitely not least, it is important to use a heat protectant on damp, clean hair before using a hairdryer or curling/straightening iron. The best time to apply a heat protector to your hair is after towel drying it, so that it is still wet but not soaking.

After following these few yet very impactful steps, your hair is free to style! For best results, only wash your hair three to four times a week. Happy washing!
