The Closest Beaches to Elon

Believe it or not, the semester is winding down and summer is approaching. Spring at Elon is in full bloom with the trees becoming greener and the weather becoming warmer. We are getting a taste of summer and many of us are soaking up the sun outside. But the nicer it is outside, the more you may long for a day at the beach to get that tan, jump in the water or read that book you’ve been wanting to. There is nothing more relaxing than a day spent near the ocean; it may be just what you need to destress during a busy time of the year when papers are stacking up and finals are right around the corner. We put together a list of the closest beaches to campus that is perfect for a day trip or weekend away.

Wrightsville Beach

The closest North Carolina beach to Elon is Wrightsville Beach, which is about three hours away. While this beach is located in the town of New Hanover, it is also a short drive away from the Southern, historic town of Wilmington. If you are looking for an adventure, you can try surfing, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and even sailing at this popular spot for water sports. Or you can simply find a spot to relax on the four-mile stretch of soft sand.

Kure Beach

A half an hour away from Wilmington and three hours and 15 minutes away from Elon is Kure Beach. This small beach town offers just as stunning beaches with a much quieter atmosphere. You can also walk along the local fishing pier or the historic Fort Fisher for more ocean views. So if you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this could be the perfect place.

Atlantic Beach

This beach town is about three hours and 30 minutes away from campus on the Bogue Banks. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Bogue Sound, there are miles upon miles of gorgeous beaches to explore on each side. You can also check out the town’s boardwalk for shopping and restaurants. Or you can try your hand at surfing at this beginner surf spot. This beach is another great option for a laidback weekend trip.

Outer Banks Beaches

The Outer Banks is made up of many equally beautiful beach towns to choose from. The closest towns to Elon are Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Duck and Kitty Hawk. Sadly, these pristine, sand dune-lined beaches are a little farther away from campus, specifically four hours away. But if you are able to swing a weekend trip, a trip to the Outer Banks is worth it.

North Carolina boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, so we highly recommend exploring them during your time at Elon. It may take some time to get to the beach, but once you are there basking in the sun and floating in the waves, you won’t regret it!
