Met Gala Looks: Have these Celebs “Met” Expectations?

Referenced as the “fashion’s biggest night out,” the Met Gala 2022 presented innovative fashion looks that captured the paparazzi’s attention and a night we are still talking about. On the first Monday every May, the Met Gala is the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s benefit that raises money for the Costume Institute. This year’s celebrity co-hosts: Regina King, Lin-Manuel Miranda and our favorite husband-wife duo Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds did not disappoint. Because of COVID, there were two Met Gala events, one in September and one in May to make up for the cancellation in 2020. The official dress code was “Gilded Glamour and White Tie,” a theme in accordance with the name of the costume exhibition at the museum, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” with gold, white, corsets, puffed sleeves, and more. Think Bridgerton.

Let’s take a look at some of these glamorous looks from this past week.

Hailey Bieber always dresses to the nines and this year is no exception. In Hope Suire’s article, “Hailey Bieber’s Met Gala looks through the years” she explains that Bieber encapsulated an Old Hollywood style. With an Ivory satin Saint Laurent dress, she wears feathers to symbolize purity combined with the sexiness of the high slit. Although her husband Justin could not make it to the red carpet, he still raved about his wife’s appearance on the internet with rocket emojis. Her gorgeous look is truly out of this world.

Gossip Girl Blake Lively always knows how to dress on theme. From the pink and red dress to match the red hues with her Burberry dress in 2016, the Versace blue feathered dress in 2017 coordinating with the blue carpet, and the 2018 Versace maroon and gold with the crimson carpet. In 2022, all eyes are on her. She took the theme of “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” to a new level, symbolizing New York City. The transformation from the bronze ensemble to the turquoise gown represents the oxidation of the Statue of Liberty. In her first look, the structure of the beading resembles the Empire State Building and in the second look, the turquoise has beaded designs of the constellations from the iconic ceiling of Grand Central Station. From matching nails, a bronze tiara and a clutch featuring the Brooklyn Bridge and Chrysler Building, Lively stole the show with husband Ryan Reynolds swooning over her all night.

Kim Kardashian’s dress was actually the Jean Louis dress Marilyn Monroe wore to sing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy in 1962. She donned the original on the famous Met steps and then immediately changed into a replica for the rest of the night. In her afterparty look, Kardashian pulls out Marilyn Monroe’s Norman Norell dress that she wore to the Golden Globes in 1962. Monroe, known for her curves, was a great choice to have Kardashian wear her pieces as she loves to accentuate her hourglass figure. In fact, Kardashian could not fit into the dress a month before, and as promised, lost 16 pounds in four weeks. Yet, the dress would not zip up over her butt, so she creatively covered up her backside with a fur coat. With Pete Davidson on her hip all night, he watched as she strutted down the red, white and blue carpet. Summer trend: Kim says platinum hair is back in style so keep an eye out for bleach blondes on the streets.

Billie Eilish was promoting body positivity through her gilded age glamour on the carpet this year. True to the theme, Eilish wore a champagne-colored corset and sage green dress featuring a lavender flower by Gucci. In an eco-friendly look, Eilish wanted to not waste any materials, but rather drape diamonds and feature the sparkle in that essence. Eilish seems to be simple, yet elegant, as her fashion has transformed through the years from wearing baggy clothing to now corsets that hug her waist. As she has gained more confidence, she is becoming bolder with her looks while still staying true to herself, with a grungy choker and lace sleeve with thumb holes.

“It’s About Damn Time” Lizzo brings her flute on the red carpet. Lizzo believes fashion can be a political statement as she flaunts her full figure and embraces who she is inside and out. The coat took over 22,000 hours to make with gold hand-embroidered silk designs as she also flaunts a Thom Browne dress featuring a corset and drop-waist. Lizzo mentions she feels like a piece of Renaissance art that is very on-brand for the theme of the night. Her rare flute she played for paparazzi cost $55,000 and hearing her talent was music to everyone’s ears at the event.
