The Benefits of Saltwater

It’s true, life is better at the beach. It’s warm, relaxing and fun. Here at The Edge, we love our beach days. We also love swimming in the ocean. The feeling of saltwater is undeniable. It can cure any summer blues. Have you ever thought about how seawater really helps the body? Let’s talk about how the ocean benefits the mind, body and soul. 

Mental: 

  • Boosts your mood → The sound and vision of the ocean can instantly lift your mood. Sea air is charged with negative ions, which increases serotonin. 

  • Helps to relax → The ocean instantly puts you at ease. The sight of a beach is so calm and serene. The audio-visual stimulus incites our nervous system, telling it to rest. 

  • Meditative actions → When swimming, there is a change in breathing patterns and a slowing of heart rate. The ocean’s view can relieve stress, believe it or not! 


Health: 

  • Improves skin → Seawater is full of anti-inflammatory minerals that help your skin clear. Soaking your skin while in the ocean has many benefits, such as hydration. It’s like a natural facial!

  • Increased magnesium → There is a higher intake of magnesium from the sea air. Magnesium is an essential nutrient for our health and well-being. It helps regulate muscle function and blood sugar levels and positively affects sleep. 

  • Respiratory system → Seawater improves breathing! People with asthma, cough, and sinusitis should go swimming in the ocean and head to the beach to breathe the fresh air. It will help eliminate toxins that attack the lungs and open up the airways a bit more. 

Physical: 

  • Exercise → There are endless opportunities for exercise when you go to the beach. In the ocean, you can swim, tread, or just float. These are all great forms of exercise to burn calories without really feeling it. Outside of the water, you can jog, run or do any workout! 

  • Reduces pain → Ocean water can help ease sore muscles, arthritis or any other pain in the body. All of it goes away in the water, just like magic. Swimming is excellent for circulation, often healing the uncomfortable pain or soreness.
