A Beginner’s Guide to Skincare
With TikTok fluctuating all throughout our lives, and with the constant release of new products, skincare has become more complicated than ever. We're here to help relieve some of that stress and let you know how easy skin care can be. The simpler, the better! Here at The Edge, we have compiled some of our favorite tips and recommendations to get you started.
Know your skin type
From normal to dry skin, or if you have oily skin in the summer and dry in the winter, it is crucial for you to know your skin type. Using the wrong products could leave your skin feeling more irritated and could cause redness! There are four basic skin types: normal, dry, oily and combination skin. By knowing your skin, you can pick the best skincare products for you. There are several quizzes online available to help you figure out what skin type you have. We recommend using the quiz on Healthline since they also provide you with tips and product recommendations!
Double-Cleanse at Night
After a long day of work, school or even just going out for a couple of drinks with friends, your skin will thank you for this. We have all been guilty (on multiple occasions) of going to bed with our makeup on, and let us tell you, our skin wasn’t too happy about it. By double-cleansing at night, it helps to get rid of all the makeup and buildup from the day that is left on your skin. We would recommend starting with an oil based cleanser, and then switching over to a water based cleanser to get rid of all the dirt, sweat and bacteria left on the skin.
Recommendations: Any CeraVe cleanser (whichever works best for your skin type) or First Aid Beauty face cleanser are always good beginner options!
Time to Dab Away
Never rub harshly on the face — always dab! By doing so, your products are more likely to efficiently absorb into the skin.
Everything is customizable
Serums and toners are optional based on what you want to improve for your skin. Eye creams and masks can be altered towards what you want as well!
Always use moisturizer
Regardless of what your skin type is, you can never go wrong with a little moisturizer. Every single skin type needs hydration.
We wanted to leave you all with an easy and adaptable skincare routine for beginners that leaves your skin feeling and looking flawless. Especially if you are struggling or still trying to get into skincare, you should try this out!
We have composed an ideal four-step skincare routine for the morning that is based around skin care fundamentals.
Cleanser
CeraVe has four different cleanser options available for all skin types! We would also recommend checking out La Roche-Posay’s hydrating gentle cleanser as well.
Toner or Serum (optional)
We would recommend starting your day off with an antioxidant serum that is high in Vitamin C. The CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum is not only affordable, but it also contains 10 percent ascorbic acid. It works really well for people who have sensitive skin too.
Moisturizer
As we said in tip number five, ALWAYS MOISTURIZE. Your skin will thank you!
Sunscreen
For the people in the back, SPF is such a vital component in your skin care routine! It prevents skin cancer, and it is the best anti-aging product out there. Lastly, it helps treat and prevent hyperpigmentation in the skin. In regards to a nighttime skincare routine, you could skip out on the sunscreen and replace it with retinol — specifically encapsulated retinol since it is gentler on your skin.
There is a lot of room for improvement in regards to your own skincare goals and customizable routines, but we can all agree that these four steps would be a great starting point in your skincare journey!
