Men’s Skincare: Let’s Talk About It!!

Gone are the days when skincare was considered a women's-only domain. Men are beginning to recognize the value in taking care of their skin, and for a good reason. Skin that is clear and healthy not only looks amazing but also helps with self- confidence. In this article, we'll go over everything you need to know to start your skincare journey, including the help of men's skincare being encouraged in the media today.

As we say at The Edge, skincare is meant to be easy, simple and adaptable.

Before we jump in, we wanted to leave our male/male-presenting readers with a quick and easy, step-by-step routine to get you started on those skincare journeys. From what we’ve heard from men, it’s a foreign territory. It seems as though most men are more likely to purchase whatever skincare product that won't break the bank. In terms of skin types, a lot of men feel as though they don’t know what skin type they have or what works best for their skin.

As we’ve reiterated in A Beginners Guide to Skincare, this routine does not differ from it.

Time to Wash Wash Wash Your face… Cleansing Time !

The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing. This removes dirt, oil and other impurities from your skin, which can cause breakouts and other skin issues. Pick a cleanser that is gentle and non-drying and is appropriate for your skin type. If you have oily skin, look for a cleanser with salicylic acid, which helps unclog pores. If you have dry or sensitive skin, look for a creamy, fragrance-free cleanser.

Optional:  Exfoliate (don’t do this more than two times a week)

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. Your skin will appear smoother and brighter as a result, and your other skincare products will also absorb deeper. Depending on your skin type, use a gentle exfoliating scrub once or twice a week. Too much of a good thing might irritate your skin, so be careful!

Moisturize, Please and Thank You :)

Moisturizing is essential for all skin types, including men's skin. If you have oily skin, pick a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer; if you have dry skin, pick a thicker, hydrating moisturizer. After cleansing (and exfoliating), moisturize your face and neck two times a day — once after you wake up and once before you go to sleep.

Two brands that have a nice variety of products for men are Jack Black’s and Kiehl's men’s skincare lines.

Sunscreen… being sunkissed has a price tag on it! Protect Your Skin!

Regardless of gender, everyone should use sunscreen. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and neck every day — even on cloudy days — with an SPF of 30 or higher. There are still UV rays out, even when it's cloudy, that can penetrate the skin and ultimately do more harm than good.

It’s not about how much or little you care; it’s about doing what’s best for you and your skin. Skincare is for everyone, and it is not a taboo thing to want to take care of yourself and to be hygienic, to say the least. Men's skincare doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. With a few simple steps, you can achieve healthy, clear skin that looks and feels great. There are a handful of influencers and TikTokers preaching about their skincare routines and forming a community of encouragement, representation and inclusion for both men and women’s skincare. Everybody has a face, and it’s time to start taking care of yours with The Edge.
