Becky G’s Iconic Relaunch

You’ve probably heard the song “Shower,” the one that goes “I’m dancing in the mirror and singing in the shower, La-da-di, la-da-da, la-da-da,” but do you remember who sings it? No? It’s Becky G, dubbed in the English music market as “the girl who sings ‘Shower.’” Many make the assumption that Becky G just disappeared and stopped making music after dropping the song “Shower,” but that is incorrect. She is currently dominating the Latin music charts!

Although Becky debuted in the English market, the singles she released after “Shower” did not match up to its success. Becky ended up becoming a one-hit-wonder in the English market and thus dubbed “the girl who sings ‘Shower.’” As Becky said in an interview with Buzzfeed, “The song was bigger than me; the song, anybody could have sung. It was an amazing pop song that had nothing of me in it.”

She was making music in English in the beginning of her career, but she shifted into the Latin industry after she started feeling a disconnect to the songs that were written by others. She felt as if anyone else could sing these songs, and she wanted to make music to which she felt connected. Although she began her career in the English market because she did not speak a lot of Spanish, she ended up learning more Spanish throughout her career.

Her first song that she launched fully in Spanish was “Sola,” which translates to the word “alone.” Becky G successfully relaunched her career in the Latin music industry. Relaunching her career has allowed her to dominate the charts and start over. Becky G has collaborated with many iconic singers and rappers in the Latin music industry such as Bad Bunny, Karol G, Annita and Natti Natasha. Outside of the Latin music industry, she has also collaborated with artists such as Julia Michaels, J-Hope from BTS, Sean Paul and David Guetta, to name a few.

Becky has gone on to win multiple Latin Grammy awards, Billboard awards, Latin Billboard awards and American Music awards. As of very recently — this month, to be exact — she has gone on to win an iHeart Radio award for Latin Pop Song of the Year. It’s time to remove the “girl who sings ‘Shower’” label from Becky because she is clearly capable of more than just being a one-hit-wonder.

The Latin music industry helped Becky G flourish and feel comfortable with being who she is. Becky has found her own style and has found a music market that is responsive to what she puts out. Becky G has become a household name in the Latino community.
