How to Beat the “Sunday Scaries”
POV: it’s 6:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Your eyes are starting to adjust to the light, and you realize you still have all of your makeup on. Your mouth is as dry as a desert, and your head is pounding as you try to reach for some water and Advil. Now what? We can confidently say that everyone has had to endure this type of hangover, and it’s the absolute worst. Slowly, snippets of the night are being puzzle-pieced together… and you panic. These are the infamous “Sunday Scaries,” where we spend our Sundays overanalyzing every move we made (and get filled in on the night by friends). We at The Edge are here to help you make your Sundays a little less scary.
All of us have made some questionable decisions, especially when alcohol is involved. Whether you’re notorious for “drunk texting,” or you tend to be a “drunk crier,” it’s natural for the scaries to be first in line knocking on your door. So, what exactly are Sunday Scaries? Coming down off of a fun, eventful weekend is difficult when you have to accept that a new week is starting. The memories we make over the weekends are an absolute blast, but once we come back down to Earth, it kind of feels like a slap across the face. Whether it’s schoolwork, chapter for your Greek organization or having to catch up with the ‘rents, Sundays aren’t really the most relaxing days.
One trick to knocking out the Sunday Scaries is all about preparation. No one likes being hungover, especially when you’ve got an exam on Monday morning and a paper due at 11:59 p.m on Sunday night. We will preach this to the choir: eat before you drink! And no, Doritos are not dinner before going out (as much as we want them to be). Eat something substantial before heading out because it’ll help make sure you don’t feel like absolute garbage the next morning. Another small thing that makes a huge difference is filling up your water bottle before going out and putting it on your nightstand. To the founder of Stanley for making “The Quencher” cups, we thank you. These are just a couple of the little things to help fight off a hangover ahead of time.
You’re probably thinking, “please stop reminding me of all the drunk calls I made this weekend.” Don’t worry, we’re getting to the good part. How do we beat the Sunday Scaries? Unfortunately, it’s hard to take back those calls to our ex-boyfriends/girlfriends on Friday nights, but that’s what friends are for! It sounds silly, but have a designated friend take your phone whenever you think you might make an interesting phone call (to say the least).
All in all, a huge part of Sunday Scaries is your mindset. We are telling you right now — you’re overthinking. Although easier said than done, cut yourself some slack because in the long run, these little mishaps won’t matter (and trust us, you’re not the only one out there who made some questionable decisions). Shit happens, but we learn from it. Next time you feel those Sunday Scaries creeping in, bookmark this article and read it again! (Xoxo, a fellow drunk-caller).
