Guide to Going Solo in Stockholm
Do you have dreams of embarking on your own adventure abroad, but you don’t know where to start? Solo travel can be daunting, especially if you have never traveled alone before. However, traveling on your own can be an empowering, life-changing experience that will boost your confidence and give you a sense of freedom unlike anything else. Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm, is the perfect place to start if you are new to solo travel!
Why Stockholm?
For travelers worried about feeling secure, this Scandinavian city is very safe. Stockholm is also a smaller city compared to other popular European stops, making it less overwhelming and easier to get around. Navigation around the city is easy, whether you choose to walk or use public transportation. Since Stockholm is comprised of multiple islands, we highly recommend that you take a commuter ferry if you need to get to another island. This unique form of public transportation offers beautiful views of the water and city. Most people in Sweden also speak English, so there is no need to worry about a language barrier. What to do in Stockholm
One simple way to experience Stockholm is to wander the charming streets of Galma Stan, the city’s old town. Walking along the cobblestone streets, you will find colorful 17th and 18th century buildings and the Royal Palace. Here, you can also walk through the narrowest street in the city — so narrow that you can touch both of the buildings on either side! It is said that if you do so and make a wish, it will come true! Another must-do in Stockholm is visiting a cafe and experiencing fika, a break to enjoy coffee and pastries. Cinnamon and cardamom buns are popular and delicious choices during this time. Whether or not you are a history buff, anyone can appreciate a visit to the Vasa Museum, which displays the world’s only fully preserved viking ship. Another museum that music lovers must visit is the ABBA museum, where you can learn about the group, see their stage outfits and records and sing along to your favorite songs.
Where to Stay in Stockholm
If you are looking to enjoy the privacy of your own room, we highly recommend a stay at the Mornington Hotel, located in the Östermalm District. This part of Stockholm is very safe and walkable from other parts of the city. Even more of a reason to stay here is the delicious Scandinavian breakfast buffet included in the cost of your room. If you are looking to meet other solo travelers during your stay, there are many options for hostels around the city. The Generator Stockholm, located a short walk from the train station, is a popular pick for solo travelers for its updated rooms and nice restaurant and bar.
We hope that we have convinced you to take that solo trip you’ve been wanting to go on! Stockholm is a great destination for solo travel if you plan to visit Scandinavia or Europe. It is a beautiful city to explore that is full of history, unique architecture and delicious food. A weekend away to this vibrant Scandinavian city is well worth it!
