Margaritaville

It's officially summer, the season of dropping first and last names in your local Mexican restaurant with a spicy marg and a side of guac. But, if you happen to find yourself away from home and local to the D.C. area this summer, perhaps it's time to find a new place to spill tea, munch on chips and indulge yourself with a refreshing piña colada. We’ve got you covered, querida – here’s a comprehensive list of the best Mexican restaurants in the DMV from a local that will have you asking ¡mas por favor!

GUAPO’S – Shirlington

A true favorite of Northern Virginians, this family-friendly informal Tex-Mex restaurant is the pinnacle of lively and high-spirited. Offering up Margarita pitchers, extensive outdoor seating, jubilant vibes, and some of the best-refried beans you’ll ever taste, this reasonably priced eatery is the perfect place to try with a group. You’ll truly find a great atmosphere here with awesome service, caring staff, and addictive salsa.

Los Tios Grill – Del Ray

Another Northern Virginia highlight, Los Tios is a relaxed family restaurant with a patio specializing in Tex-Mex and Salvadorian cuisine with, of course, a litany of margaritas to choose from. Often referred to by locals as the best place in Del Ray for family dining, this energetic dining spot is known for its fajitas, fried ice cream, and margarita options.

Urbano – Old Town

If you’re looking for a little more style, we recommend checking out Urbano in Alexandria. Home to elevated Mexican cuisine, this modern vibey spot includes brunch, craft cocktails, and desserts.

Rosa Mexicano – National Harbor

Across the bridge in Maryland is the home of a vibrant, more elevated chain Mexican restaurant known for its creative margaritas, guacamole, sauces, and chic vibes. If you’re willing to spend a little more money, this is a fancier option to get some expansive views of the Potomac River while enjoying some state-of-the-art enchiladas. Upscale and fresh, Rosa Mexicano is also famous for its weekend brunch.

Cactus Cantina – Washington D.C

To round out our list is the Cactus Cantina – just one block north of the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Drawing both college students and families alike, this lively Tex-Mex spot is known for its margaritas, patio and lively energy. This fresh eatery also is known for its great vegetarian options.
