A Self-Improvement Generation
Self-care isn’t all facemasks and sleeping in. It can take some serious effort.
As students with endless responsibilities, carving out any kind of leisure time can feel like the least of our priorities. But focusing inward is so important in the midst of a busy week. The positive physical and mental effects of self-care are more than enough proof that self-love isn’t just skin-deep. So give yourself permission to be a little selfish!
There’s a revolution of teens and young adults taking wellness into their own hands. Gen Z prioritizes its health by building habits like journaling, skincare and yoga. What do these activities have in common? It’s all about self-love. Easing the mind, healing the skin, moving the body — there’s nothing quite like it.
Activities like these may seem miniscule, but they hold more power than it appears.
Self-expression is a form of caring for your mind. Journaling is truly a cheat code to getting those stubborn thoughts out for good. Grab a pen and pour your heart out onto a piece of paper. Be vulnerable, be dramatic; write it all down. Let the ideas flow from your head through your fingertips and just watch how those thoughts get a little less heavy.
A healthy body supports a healthy mindset. Investing time and energy into yourself is the best way to show some self-love. Skincare, haircare, nails, — lean into whichever calls your name. We all deserve a good pampering session.
Movement is the last of our three pillars of self-improvement. Getting in a good sweat is amazing for the mind, just as much as the body. Physical movement eases stress by releasing nature's pain relief into the body — endorphins, of course. Not only does it provide an immediate mood boost, but movement aids the body’s longevity as we age. Even simple morning stretches foster great benefits. Take some time each day to get your blood pumping, even if it’s a short walk to your favorite playlist. You might just find yourself to be in a better mood by the end of it.
With technology at our fingertips, it’s easier than ever to enjoy this newfound era of self-care. Anyone can jump right into a Pilates class, listen to meditation podcasts or challenge themselves with a thoughtful journal prompt. Anything is up for grabs, and a world of self-improvement is waiting for you with arms wide open. Gen Z is leading a health movement, and here at The Edge, we’re happy to be on board.
Our advice? Be intentional with your free time. Do things that make you feel taken care of, no matter how big or small. If you invest in yourself, your body and mind will thank you later.
Self-improvers, we commend you. Keep up the good work.
