The Best TV Shows of 2024 – So Far
2024 is the year everything comes back. Thousands of jobs were lost after the 148-day writer’s strike in 2023 that rocked the TV and film industry. But, as we start a new year easing away from compensation conflicts and strikes, several interesting and powerful television shows are hitting platforms. So, for all the TV buffs out there, we here at The Edge have curated a list of the best shows of 2024 — so far.
One Day, Netflix
Netflix’s new romantic drama series, One Day, based on David Nicholls’ book, will break your heart. If the 2011 film adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway, was hard to watch for viewers, then this one will be painful. From lovers to friends to enemies, viewers have a look into the relationship between the main characters, Dexter and Emma. Each episode checks in on the lives of the protagonists on one day — July 15, or St. Swithin’s Day in the United Kingdom. Taking place over 20 years, we see each protagonist face frustrating real-life events, power dynamics and a captivating love story that will have us screaming at the television. This show expresses the emotions of loss, hope, hardship, love and more. By the time you reach the last episode, you’ll also be reaching for a box of tissues due to a sucker-punch of an ending.
Masters of The Air, Apple TV+
Picture this: A thrilling new TV show that's like a love affair with history, passion and aviation all rolled into one tantalizing package. Based on the acclaimed novel, Masters of the Air by Donald L. Miller, Steven Spielberg’s television adaptation embarks viewers on a journey through the skies of World War II. “Masters of the Air” takes us soaring through the skies with the men (our favorites Austin Butler and Callum Turner) of the Eighth Air Force. This breathtaking saga is sure to leave you breathless as viewers watch the daring exploits of these pilots battling it out in the skies over Europe. With a stellar cast, including talented actors bringing these iconic figures to life, “Masters of the Air” promises to be a compelling and unforgettable journey through one of history's most defining moments. So buckle up and prepare for an epic adventure that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix
Most people recognize “Avatar: The Last Airbender” as the beloved animated Nickelodeon series from 2005, but this series is coming to life on screen. Viewers will find themselves diving headfirst into a world where bending elements isn't just a superpower, it's a way of life. From fire to water, to earth to air – you'll follow the incredible journey of Aang, the last Airbender, who's on a mission to bring balance back to a world torn apart by war. This show isn't just about jaw-dropping action and mind-blowing bending techniques (although those are seriously impressive). It's a rollercoaster ride of emotions, with friendships forged, destinies embraced, and villains redeemed. Get ready to laugh, cry, and cheer alongside Aang and his friends as they embark on an epic adventure that leaves you breathless and begging for more. Trust me, once you start watching "Avatar: The Last Airbender," you won't be able to stop.
Cinema, television, and media are opening a new world to all viewers this year.
