Is it that sweet? We guess so.
As we prepare for warmer weather and cultivate images of bright blue water and pretty pink bikinis, we also gather music for our summer playlists. Here at The Edge, ours thus far includes some Dua Lipa and a little bit of Olivia Rodrigo, but there is one Pop Princess in particular who has been on our mind for quite some time now and who will, it seems, dominate the summer.
Sabrina Carpenter, a 24-year-old icon hailing from East Greenville, Pennsylvania, has the world head-bopping and hip-swaying to her hit songs like "Feather," "Nonsense," and the most recent "Espresso". Her lyrics blend wrapping men around her little finger and feeling light as a feather once she's rid herself of her exes. Her vibe of freedom, self-love, and high-level confidence establishes the perfect foundation for the carefree and confident summer we've been craving.
But what about Sabrina do we find so enticing?
Her blonde hair, which always seems to be styled in the perfect blowout?
Her gorgeous and toned figure, which glistens beneath the glitter-sweat her body magically produces?
Her beautiful voice and ability to cover any song with an ethereal and enchanting flair?
The short answer is yes, yes, and yes, but more importantly, what delights us most is her ability to preach self-love through the lens of unburdened confidence. Let's use her latest hit, "Espresso," as an example:
[Verse 2]
I'm working late 'cause I'm a singer
Oh, he looks so cute wrapped 'round my finger
My twisted humor make him laugh so often
My honeybee, come and get this pollen
Carpenter's unapologetic confidence in herself and subtle glance at the crazy career she has built encourage women to feel empowered and not feel sorry about it. In her song, she notes her success and "twisted humor" while emphasizing her man's (Saltburn star Barry Keoghan) inability to be without her. In Carpenter's world, he is like a honeybee drawn to her potent pollen. And it seems, we are all drawn to her as well.
The assertiveness and poise Carpenter has created within her lyrics and music have encouraged other women to do the same. Her capability to toss a man to the side when he is not doing her justice or emphasize another man's inability to function without her is a bold move. However, this mindset is what many women settling below their standards need right now. Carpenter's message relays that if your man is not head over heels, totally obsessing over you while also supporting your career, he is not worth your time.
Through her new releases and recent performances, Carpenter is building up a world where women should be proud of their accomplishments and not have to limit themselves or make themselves smaller for a man. So, maybe it's time to break up with that boy and trade him in for some caffeinated confidence. This summer, our drink of choice is the “you espresso”.
