Spring Cleaning - Mentally & Literally

As we’re all desperately wishing winter away, and with spring break on the horizon, now is the perfect time to declutter your life mentally and literally. We at The Edge firmly believe the worst of winter are these last few weeks of February, the coldest and most disheveled winter month. So here are some ideas on how to organize your life before things begin to heat up.

If you’re experiencing a winter funk (and trust me we’ve all been there), the classic concept of “spring cleaning” can pull you right out of it. Spring cleaning is known to help reduce both anxiety and stress, but why not apply spring cleaning to both your home space and your mental space? Lucky for you, here are The Edge’s four favorite tips to clean through the winter negativity!

  1. Organize your room.

Everyone understands how easy it is to lose motivation to clean through your room as the semester goes on. But when you really think about it, now is the perfect time to tackle the organization you’ve been avoiding. With the cold weather and lack of activities, there’s a high chance our hobbies right now consist of putting on a TV show to binge watch, and end with finishing the show. Cleaning up your space truly does declutter your life both physically and mentally. And with a clean room, you’ll have more motivation to have a productive last few weeks before break!

2. Create a routine you love.

If you’re feeling uninspired about your current routine, this is your sign to switch it up. Designing a routine you love is a great way to clean through your life. If your daily routine feels more like a task, try adding new activities and tasks daily. One idea could be to switch your exercise routine to something you actually want to do instead of forcing yourself to have a daunting hour at the gym. This could be a workout class, yoga, meditation, a walk, or if we are lucky enough with a nice day, a hike!

3.Write down your goals for spring semester.

With the quick transition into the spring semester, it can be hard to find time to plan out what you want out of the next four months. Especially in this last month, when life can feel painfully dull, we promise a list of your goals can help you feel reinspired and excited to take on the spring. By writing out your goals, you will not only clear your thoughts, but set yourself up for a successful semester. Even if your goals seem minor, anything counts!

4. Clean out things that did not work last semester.

We all can be guilty of repeating old habits from time to time. By writing out your goals, you can now see specifically what worked last semester, and what didn’t. By cleaning out your negative thoughts, habits, and behaviors, you have a better chance of designing the spring you want. Similar to cleaning out a closet, think of your mind in the same way. While you throw out the concerningly outdated shirts from 8th grade, throw out the bad habits you tend to fall back into each semester.
