Tourist Traps that are Actually Worth it
When you hear the phrase "tourist trap," you probably think of overpriced gift shops, massive crowds, and underwhelming experiences. While some destinations are indeed overhyped, there are a few so-called tourist traps that genuinely live up to their reputation and are absolutely worth visiting.
1. Times Square – New York City, USA
While it might look like one of the most crowded, chaotic places packed with cliche stores selling well over-priced “I ♥ NY” shirts, Times Square is an electrifying experience. The massive billboards, diverse crowds of both locals and travelers, and the street performers turning your head in every direction creates an energy that can’t be replicated. Whether you’re people-watching, catching a Broadway show, or just taking in the iconic lights, Times Square is a place that truly embodies the spirit of New York.

2. Eiffel Tower – Paris, France
The Eiffel Tower is still one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world for a reason, despite the fact that many tourists write it off as an overrated icon filled with selfie sticks and overpriced drinks. It's a breathtaking experience to watch it sparkle at night, and the panoramic views from the top truly give you the best view of Paris. Instead of standing in the huge lines to climb, have a picnic at the nearby Champ de Mars or take in the view from the Trocadéro Gardens for a little less crowded experience.
3. Santorini – Greece
Despite having a reputation for being packed and expensive, Santorini manages to live up to its dreamy, picture perfect image. The white-washed buildings with blue domed roofs stand out against the beautiful Aegean Sea and we can promise they're as gorgeous as they look on Instagram. The secret to a good time in Santorini? Explore outside of Oia; towns like Pyrgos and Megalochori have the same appeal but fewer visitors. To avoid the busiest summer months, visit in the spring or fall. It'll be the real life Mamma Mia experience!

4. Grand Canyon – Arizona, USA
Some may argue that the Grand Canyon is just a big hole in the ground, but standing at the edge of this enormous natural wonder is an incredible experience (and photo opportunity)! The size and beauty of the canyon alone are enough to create breathtaking views, but visiting at sunrise or sunset will make for an even better experience! For a less crowded visit, head to the North Rim or get your steps in and take a hike down into the canyon instead of just admiring it from its main viewpoints. Charge your camera for this trip, the pictures will be worth it!
5. Niagara Falls – USA/Canada
Yes, it’s packed with tourists, souvenir shops, and chain restaurants, but Niagara Falls is still one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world. If the force and size of 3,000 tons of water tumbling down every second isn't captivating enough, see the falls up close on the iconic Maid of the Mist boat tour for an unforgettable experience. Explore the nearby parks and trails for a less touristy experience, or go at night when the falls are brightly lit. Now the real question is: which side will you be visiting from, New York or Canada?
While some tourist traps are truly best avoided, others have earned their popularity for a reason. Knowing when to go, where to get the greatest views, and how to avoid the crowds are all essential to enjoying them. The next time someone tells you to steer clear of one of these popular spots, reconsider; you might have found your new favorite vacation spot and wonder why it was ever referred to as a "trap" in the first place!
