Semester Slumps: How to Make it to the Finish Line at the End of the Semester

It’s that time of the year: spring break has ended, assignments are piling up and leisure time seems to be slowly slipping away. Powering through the end of the semester is always a challenge, but we at The Edge are here to help you get through it! Below are some of our best study and relaxation tips and tricks to help you make your way to finals!

Pomodoro Method:

This technique was developed in the late 1980s by Francesco Cirillo: software designer and expert in time management! The trick goes like this: When you’re completing an assignment, set a timer for 25 minutes, and completely immerse yourself within the task. Once the timer goes off, set another one for only 5 minutes. Use these 5 minutes to completely step away from the task. Take a break, eat a snack, or even scroll on your phone; just don’t focus on the assignment. The goal is to give your brain a complete break. Repeat this sequence of 25 and 5 minute timers until your task is complete!

Research has shown that this is actually a great way to improve productivity and relieve stress. One’s focus is likely enhanced when they are able to step away periodically from the task at hand.

Have a Planner:

If you don’t already own one at this point in the semester, it’s never too late to make a purchase! Using a planner, whether physical or digital, is a perfect way to write down your tasks (even outside of school) in order to manage your time properly. Here are some of our favorite planners:

Plan Out Events to Look Forward to!

After a stressful week, knowing you and your friends have a reservation to try that new restaurant can sometimes be the one thing pushing you through! Research shows that planning out events like this can help increase your motivation to complete tasks, as well as keep a sense of excitement for you during your more difficult days of the week. Next time you’re sitting in class, open the group chat to coordinate a fun plan! Here are some fun ideas:

  • Try a new restaurant

  • Go thrifting

  • Baking night

  • Spa night
