Last-Minute Halloween Costumes

By Miles Clemmer

Growing up, I spent weeks searching for the perfect Halloween costume. It was the one day a year I could dress up and become something I had only dreamed about. Now, in the days of themed parties, dressing in costume or for a theme isn't such a rare event. If you’re anything like me, Halloween itself turns into a week-long marathon – you need five costumes and have exactly twelve dollars to invest. Here are five last minute costumes that cost little-to-nothing and you can easily make in your dorm room.

Jailbird

Who doesn’t own something black and white striped? All you need for this costume is a striped article of clothing and a piece of paper. Feel free to add on some handcuffs or a beanie. If you want to really look the part, you can hold an inmate number or tape it to your top.

Cavewoman

All this takes is animal print and either an old top or just fabric! Just pair a ripped top with a cheetah print skirt and you’re set. Another option is cutting some fabric to make a dress. I recommend something one shouldered with a jagged hem for the ultimate Fred Flinstone vibe. To finish the look, tease your hair and bronze your face for that out-of-wild look.

Goddess

This one is all in the accessories. As a base, throw on a white skirt and shirt, romper, or dress. Add a pair of sandals, braids, glitter, and gold tattoos and you have a Greek goddess-inspired look. You can make a wreath for your head or add leaves to your hair for an extra little something.

Favorite TV Characters

If you are really in a pinch, my go-to is a TV character. Some easy ones are Betty from Riverdale or Kelly from Saved by the Bell. For Betty, all you really need is a cardigan and high pony tail. Recreate Kelly’s classic 80’s style with high waisted pants, a bright top, hoops, and big hair.
