Oktoberfest: From a German Celebration to a World Attraction

When one thinks of Oktoberfest, most people automatically picture beer and funky outfits. What a lot of people don’t know is that it all started as a wedding celebration for the Bavarian royalty. Since then, Oktoberfest has gone through many evolutions into the massive festival it is today. From a wedding party to horse races to beer tents, the celebration has taken on many forms. The event goes from mid-September to early-October, allowing for more than enough time to immerse yourself in the German culture and visit one of the many beer tents on site. You can also find a massive 7,000-person parade celebrating the history and culture, as well as carnival games and incredible food all around.

With as much attention as the festival receives on social media, the majority of the patrons are actually local Germans. Everyone dresses in their finest Bavarian clothes, which is part of what makes celebrating the culture so fun. With Lederhosen for the men and Dirndls for the women, dressing up is a must. The beer is the main attraction, but experiencing the authentic German culture is what keeps patrons coming back. It’s no wonder why the event makes over $1 Billion dollars annually.

Possibly one of the best reasons to attend is the fact that entrance is totally free. Beer and food of course come at a price, but how could you resist authentic Brezeln (pretzels) and fresh Wurst (sausage)? Another way to keep costs low is only staying for a day or two. Most annual patrons say a day or two at Oktoberfest is more than enough to immerse yourself in the culture and make your way through all fourteen of the beer tents on site. The event is something everyone needs to experience at least once in their lifetime.

Whether you’re interested in visiting Oktoberfest while you’re abroad or want to book a last minute flight, the festival is sure to be worth the trip. People from all across the world attend the event and join in on the celebration. Oktoberfest may be the only chance you can find to rock a Dirndl and experience the German culture in such a unique way.
