A Day in the Life of Our Very Own Student Athletes
We all know that it’s not easy balancing academics and extracurriculars, but for some Elon students, that is their whole life.
It takes a special person to be a student athlete, and it is a lot more than just being able to have one of the “cool” backpacks.
This week, The Edge got a sneak peek into two athletes lives, and we were able to talk with them about what being a student athlete means to them.
Mak Boyer (Cheerleading ‘22) starts her day at 8:00 a.m., with a workout given to her by her trainer, around 9:30 a.m. she heads to the shower, gets ready, and eats breakfast, and is ready to start the academic part of her day.
Boyer heads to class and finishes up around 4:00 p.m., just in time to head straight to practice. When practice is over at 8pm, Boyer usually likes to grab dinner with some friends.
When she gets home around 9:00 p.m., she showers off and gets straight to homework. Once she heads to bed around 12:00 a.m., she gets ready to do it all over again the next day.
When we asked Boyer what being a student athlete at Elon meant to her she couldn’t contain her excitement.
“Being a cheerleader [at Elon] means the world to me,” Boyer said, “Being apart of this community has shaped me as a person, because I know my team loves Elon just as much as I do.”
Switching gears a little, we also got the opportunity to talk to Camilo Ponce (Tennis ‘22) about a day in his life.
Ponce starts his day at 7:30 a.m with practice until 10:30 a.m., then he grabs some breakfast and heads off to class.
Around 3:30 he heads to weight training which ends at 6:00 p.m. Then it’s time for dinner, a shower, and homework.
The transition to student athlete life was a little different for Ponce because he has lived in Quito, Ecuador his whole life. Ponce also attended an online highschool so he was worried about the transition from an online highschool to a real life university.
When asked if he liked being a student athlete he said, “I love it, what would I do without tennis? It’s everything for me”, and this is the case for so many other athletes at Elon as well.
Make sure to come to the next home football game and tennis match to see these stars in action!
