The New York City spectacle, hosted annually at the Metropolitan Museum, offers the one time of year when you can wear a garment made entirely of Swarovski crystals and still get outshined by someone more extra. The event showcases celebrities in avant-garde attire for the sake of fashion and produces iconic looks year after year. The best part is that this is a fundraising gala, benefiting the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. So the gala uses fashion to support fashion.

Now, what will the next theme be?

*Drumroll please*

Introducing, “About Time: Fashion and Duration.”

Here’s what we know:

First, the theme serves to illustrate the path that fashion has taken from the 18th century through the 20th century. Many of the practices used in today’s clothing manufacturing are inspired by the forms used in earlier eras, and this theme highlights those origins.

What is the objective of this theme?

The intent is for guests to immerse themselves in the fashion that was so instrumental in creating the shapes and styles of modern day fashion.

What was the source of inspiration?

The museum’s press release states that the inspiration is “la durée" — time that flows, accumulates, and is indivisible,” an elegant idea created by Henri-Louis Bergson, a 19th century French philosopher.

Who is hosting you might ask?

This year’s Met Gala will be co-chaired by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Anna Wintour. The occasion will also mark Streep’s first time attending the event, which is sure to be exciting.

Finally, the museum’s spokesperson clarified that the 2020 Met Gala is set to take place May 4, 2020, and a public exhibit will run from May 4 through September 7.

You may be anticipating your favorite celebrity’s ensemble or dreaming of what you would strut down the carpet in. Regardless, get excited because the event of the year will be here in no time!
