Preparing to go abroad? Here’s 6 feelings we can all relate to.
As some of us prepare to go abroad, whether it’s a J Term or a semester-long trip, it’s normal to be nervous! Many of the abroad experiences have preparatory seminars to help ease these worries, but the best thing is to remember that you’re not alone.
1. How am I supposed to leave my friends?
The whole point of the abroad experience is to push you out of your comfort zone. You’ll be experiencing different cultures that will change your global perspective. It might be hard initially, but it’s so easy to stay in touch it’ll feel like nothing’s different. Upon arrival, everyone else will be in the same position as you, and you’ll find that you’ve automatically made friends.
2. FOMO?
The fear of missing out. Everyone experiences it whether abroad or not. Just remember that while you may be missing the Elon culture, others are wishing they were on your trip seeing all of the sights you are.
3. What am I forgetting?
As your advisor walks you through the steps to prepare for your trip such as securing a visa and booking flights, take a moment to think about what items could easily slip through the cracks and be forgotten. It always helps to make a list and run through it with someone to make sure. Some items can be replaced easily, but others not so much.
4. Will I be able to communicate?
Some trips go to places where there may be a language barrier. Not being able to speak the dominant language can be frustrating when it comes time to get a point across but be patient. Remember that the people you’re speaking to are probably just as frustrated as you, so relax and try again.
5. Will I like the food?
Picky eaters’ main concern might be the difference in cuisine from culture to culture. Although it’s still possible to find food to fit your dietary needs, trying popular dishes is part of the experience after all!
Regardless of whether you can relate to all or none of these feelings, your trip abroad will help you discover your place in the world. Soon, you’ll be back on campus before you know it sharing all of your stories from the trip that changed your life.
