Mother Begs Female Students to Stop Wearing Leggings
After a year of female empowerment and many strides to achieve equality between men and women around the world, many are shocked and outraged at a mother’s plea to female students.
Maryann White, a Catholic mother, has sparked outrage online over her plea to female students to stop wearing leggings. White was attending a mass at the University of Notre Dame when she noticed a group of female students wearing leggings.
White took her concerns public and wrote a letter to the editor that was later published by The Observer, Notre Dame’s student newspaper.
“My sons know better than to ogle a woman’s body –– certainly when I’m around (and hopefully, also when I’m not).” White said. “They didn't stare, and they didn't comment afterwards. But you couldn't help but see those blackley naked rear ends. I didn't want to see them –– but they were unavoidable. How much more difficult for young guys to ignore them.”
White continues her letter by telling female students to “think of the mothers of sons the next time you go shopping and consider choosing jeans instead.” She hopes female students will start choosing to not wear leggings because boys will look at their behinds.
While the mother of four had hoped that her letter would begin the trend against leggings, it had the opposite effect. Many student organizations bound together and wore leggings on certain days. The reason females wear leggings is not to get the attention from male students but because they are comfortable and are also worn to workout.
When a girl wakes up in the morning and decides to put on leggings, her decision does not revolve around getting guys’ attention, and she should not be blamed for male student’s inability to pay attention. Men need to be taught to respect women and not expect her to change her clothing and behavior to please them.
